The spambots' IP addresses are random. I tried banning any IP address that was repeated in the FG's log, but that just causes the spambots to switch addresses using rotating VPNs.

While hunting down spambots the past few days, I've been finding FGs from 2002 ---before I was a member---who have been lurking here for basically DECADES without posting one word.

Now that I have to monitor every single damn log-in....arg...., I have found OLD FGs who visit daily but NEVER say a word. You would you think that they might at least want to impart some of their wisdom to Coligny.

I feel you. Done that for a few years in another place. Think I banned ~15,000 bots by hand. You'll often find patterns and then, maybe, you (more likely admin) can lift them directly from the database without having to go through the hand-banning. I remember for instance a batch of bots, all of whom had some version of "usedbuckettrucks" as part of their email-addy.

Right now, the FG has a problem with Zombie Spambots---That is, the banned spambots don't "understand" they're banned and they continue to unsuccessfully log-in every 30 minutes after they banned*, grrrr.

* Yes, yes, I know there is a "way" to reject the
spambots log-in but I have neither the Admin
authority to do so, nor the smarts to
accomplish that.

Finally, I am having some success in defeating the two(?) major bot armies that were carpet bombing the FG. I have banned enough ranges of IP addresses that the main Russian bot-swarm and another fcukquing Mormon(?!) bot-horde have run out of IP Ranges to use.
