beating the heat

the 20-someodd year old boiler in our house is on its last so more often than not when i go to shower, i'm lucky to get water that's anywhere between tepid and luke-warm. as much as that's gonna suck for my last winter in this house, for now it's great. a nice cool shower in the afternoon, skip drying my hair and i can usually manage the 15 second walk to my school without sweating too much.

next year, when we finally move into our new place, we'll have a north american style house w/ proper insulation, windows etc which will go a long way to keeping things cool. trees are also a good thing. my lawn is still fairly green where the trees provide shade but mostly brown elsewhere.

since we're in the boondocks of shimane, one thing we have is space. enough in fact for one of these.

very tempting to get once the new place is finished in the spring. great way to make summer-time "friends" i'm sure. fg pool party in shimane next summer?

Heatstroke disrupts field day

From the Daily Yomiuri
OSAKA--Thirty-two students at a high school in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture, were hospitalized during the school's field day Wednesday after they complained of heatstroke symptoms, police said.

The students, seven boys and 25 girls, suffered only mild symptoms.

According to Takatsuki Police Station, Takatsuki Kita High School called for an ambulance at about 10:35 a.m. after a student complained of nausea and dizziness. The ambulance took the student to a hospital.

The school continued with the event, but about an hour later, it had to call for another ambulance as more students complained of feeling unwell

It seems to me that every year they continue to push the date of the high school 'play day' forward. This year one of our local high schools had it's play day on August 30th with predictable results. From what I have been told, there were several cases of heat stroke requiring ambulances to be called.
