I'm with the squirrel on this one.

(Of course, that didn't stop me from abusing Taro's super-Starbucks gift card when I was in town. :D )

Don't you just love the subtle psychological ploy that goes into the labeling of sizes? It's not just Starbucks, it's also McDonald's "regular" size. Or maybe they just start with "large" these days and go up from there. It's all bullshit.

At Gold's Gym outlets there are no small or M size T-shirts for sale and the L shirt is equal to a short tight M.

ergo.

'Aaah no way are you a L size buddy ,you'll need the XL at least'

I do agree that the size labels have changed. However, I also think that there is no such thing as a small anymore due to the McDonaldnization of society. McDonald's fries use to come in a small little paper bag. What is now called a medium used to be called a large back then.

Soda companies have also contributed to this problem. While the average size used to be a .35 liter (12 oz.) can, the average size now is a 1 liter (33 oz.) bottle, and moving on up to 2 liters.

I must admit that after paying for a Starbucks coffee, I could care less what they call it as long as they give me a non-Japan portion size. I still remember my old Japanese boss telling me that after he had worked in the U.S. and had returned to Japan, he was constantly ordering two to three entrees every meal because he became accustomed to the large portion sizes.

and later he changed jobs....

and to think I owe it all to US standard size portions...

And yet they charge more for the 20 oz. or 1 liter bottle at a 7-11 than they do for a 2 liter bottle at a grocery store. Great scam.
