Renting a phone would be cool but I would like to be able to come back to America with a cool phone. I know that I will not be able to use it on the wireless networks here but it would make a nice alarm clock or a camera, not to mention it would look better than any other phone here. Lol
Im just gonna bring my keitai home just as a pressie for a friend or family-member that offers digital camera (i had to shell out extra for the software and cable to connect to pc) and some java games. -thats Europe- (no phone service)...

there are prepaid cellphones - but the majority are bill phones for which youll have to sign up contracts.
AU (KDD) is the cheapest generally (esp. if youre a student) but there is also - Vodafone /J-phone and DoCoMo (NTT)
pretty much any subway or train station here has public phones in them or nearby - it may work out cheaper for you to use them?
