It's funny that these same criticisms of Japanese youth (they don't speak correctly, their vocabulary is too limited, the educational curriculum is too lenient, etc.) have been applied by American critics to kids in the US. The dumbing down of language is a phenomenon occurring in both cultures (and for all I know, it could be happening in every culture).

And are the same criticisms, that the grandparents of those now complaining made, when they were children.

It seems to be hardwired into our brains to both gradually make language simpler, and to bitch about said process incessantly. These two opposing behaviors won't ever resolve with each other, I think.

It is becoming more and more clear to me that hypocrisy and self-contradiction is inherent to being human, and can't ever be escaped. We are just going to have to learn to deal with it.

A discussion on the use of language from 'Falling Down' Incidentally Michael Douglas has mentioned several times that he thinks it was his best role ever.

[William "D-FENS" Foster is sitting on a concrete ruin filled with graffiti, resting, and 2 Hispanic guys walk up to him saying he is trespassing]

William "D-FENS" Foster: I didn't see any signs?
Dude 1: [pointing at a graffiti skull] What do you call that?
William "D-FENS" Foster: Graffiti?
Dude 1: No no, it's not fucking graffiti, that's a sign.
Dude 2: You can't read it man.
Dude 1: I'll read it for you. It says this is fucking private property. No fucking trespassing. That means fucking you.
William "D-FENS" Foster: It says all that?
Dude 1: Yeah.
William "D-FENS" Foster: Well, if you maybe wrote in fucking English I would fucking understand you.

Languages arent static. Like so many other things they evolve or die out. Thats why we dont speak ye olde english any more... People just find it uncomfortable to deal with change.
