BBC thoughts on pronunciation

Postby Mulboyne » Thu May 20, 2004 8:24 am

As for Japanese names, Sangster sometimes uses a little trick.

To pronounce the name of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, she recommends announcers to stress the first syllable, "ko."

Sangster knows the pronunciation of "Koizumi" should basically be flat. However, because English-speaking announcers tend to stress the "zu" in Koizumi and read the name as "Koi-zuu-mi," she decided to suggest accentuating the "ko." In this way, newscasters can read the name Koizumi with a pronunciation closer to the way in which Japanese people would say his name, she said.

"Mr KOiZOOHmi will reconvene the ShinJOOHKOO Parliament after the oBAHn holiday which he spent in KOHb"

Yes, so in this sentence, Ms Sangster, the newsreader has got the first word right. What about the rest?

Seriously, I have heard some North American friends pronounce Kobe "Kohb" instead of "Kohbay".
