So...I'm Off To Japan! (And I've Got A Few Questions)

Postby XSquared » Thu May 20, 2004 2:26 pm

Hi All,

This is my first post here at the forums. I just had a few questions from some of the knowledgeable experts out there. I'll try and keep this short.

1) What is the best way to make money in Japan for a Canadian? Is teaching English the best option. If so, what companies are the best to work for ?

2) What cities/towns are the cheapest to live in Japan ?

3) Is there anything else I should know before leaving to Japan in 2 months ?

Thanks

Yikes. Now we're being asked to be psychic.

1) Moshi-moshi? How 'bout your skillz? Degree(s)? Interests?

2) The middle of nowhere is 50% cheaper but jobs are limited to your ingenuity and talent. The general FG option is the countryside will drive you crazier quicker.

1) teaching is the easiest way. (import maple syrup as it is worth its weight in gold over here)
2) Anywhere out in the boondocks is nice and cheap. Vegetables can be usually bought alongside the road (fresh and cheap). Apartments are much cheaper. Utilities, I don't really know, I'd say they are about the same.
3) Do all the things you want to do before you come.

How are you coming? On your own bill, through a program or job, or is this an educational/travel adventure?

1) Any companies that you'd recommend over others.

2) Specifically cities - Is Fukuoaka, Hiroshima, Kobe, or any other cities gonna be less costly than Tokyo.

3) Trust me I have - It's off to the Land od the Rising Sun for me.

I'm working right now. I'll have about $2000 CDN by the time I get down there. I'm also working on my Tesol certificate, so that I can kepp teaching english as option. BTW, do most schools rquire that you have a degree ?

I'm coming to Japan because I love the culture, the fashion, the women, etc. I wanna get away from Canada - i've lived here all my life and I'm tired of it.

But....I need some advice. Should I work at a hotel or a resort ?

BTW, how much is a gym membership in Japan - I plan on continuing to stay in shape. Is there any good sites you recommend or people I should talk to ?

Maybe teaching english isn't your thing

Just kidding

Why not combine work with "working out" ...

Australian/Canadian/US/New Zealand/Japanese/European male floor staff required to work in a foreign lady hostess club (Roppongi).... 1100 yen/hour. Call Dave for an interview on 090-9232-4368... before 2nd of May, 2004. Must be between 18 to 28 years of age. (posted 4/29/04)

Just do a search for "Jobs in Japan" or similar keywords on the web (and this site) and you'll discover plenty of pearls, like the above ad (albeit now out of time) from this site

Or you could start multiple threadson FG ...

Good luck.

They also love talking about how safe Japan is, compaed to the west.
