That freaks me out. One of my friends works for a bank and he told me that nobody at his bank can go home until everybodies balance works out. I asked him if you were a yen or ten short could you just throw in a coin from your pocket and he said no way.
In university my roommate worked for the Royal Bank, and they had a float of up to 30 dollars either way gians or loss. If they were within that there was no problem. Once he was short 50 000 but he soon found the error.

I've experienced the same anal-retentiveness from my banks.
Once, a shinjin teller girl made a 3 yen error on a currency transfer to Lithuanian orphanage for me.

The next day she and her two butt-head bucho were at my door to apologize. The girl had slap marks on her and she looked as though she had been crying for some time. It was obvious all of them were up all night to find the missing THREE yen.

Seeing my horror, my super-kool shacho at the time subtly rebuked them in Japanese saying that they had offended my "gaijin-religious-sense-of-compassion by torturing the poor girl."
