I have a question.

Comedy Central, here in the states frequently puts up sketches from their cable TV shows online to draw interest and get more viewers to tune in.

Do any Japanese studios or shows, put clips of their shows up?
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

And I take it they don't come with any links? Or have you just come here to get information, not give?

I think the reaction to your post was more a warning than anything; this topic could lead into a naughty illegal sharing orgy; something we only do in private together. Not on a public board.

IMO, most here have been pretty helpful considering you have a whopping 5 posts built up. How much have you given, compared to received?

Why haven't they introduced TV over the net? I mean it would make a fortune globally....

It's all about money and control. Films and TV have different contracts and distribution agreements with all the different markets around the world. Also, the licensing rights and contracts with the creators, actors, artist, writers and musicians often specify certain media and certain regions. If they made things available on the net, most of that would go out the window. Even if it makes sense for the studios to do it, think of all the middle men in distribution that will be out of work. They're not going give up their jobs without a fight.

It seems inevitable that things will go that direction, but the industry will have to be dragged into it kicking and screaming. And the pessimistic view is that to access that kind of content in the future, your machine will probably need so much hardware and software DRM locking it down that a lot of people will hang on to their old incompatible machines that won't be able to watch the latest content.

I love this quirky little country, but they would have to pay me to watch Japanese T.V. I mean, my god, even the BBC is more interesting.

I always thought it was about the advertisements not reaching the target audiences when you went abroad. I mean think about it, the US has what, 200+ million people... imagine say HBO gets 40 million subscribers. If they hit the net, they could reach at least 4-5 billion people... it's a no brainer. Of course not making it free and a subscriber based fee would generate revenue that could then be used to pay for those that made the content. Certainly some jobs would be lost, but others would be created. It takes some serious server space, setups, admin work and so on to keep it going. The ordering system, technical support and so on.

I think TV companies that try to hold on to the old ways are gonna be left behind in this century... people are tired of line based content especially when you factor in new networking speeds, some reaching over 33gb per second.. (extreme end)... I personally have a 1gbit LAN at home used to transfer files back and forth.. waiting on a faster than 100mbit BB service.

I hate the VOD model. If they used that with new movies I'd be quite happy. However, who wants to pay 799 yen for a 1-3 year old movie? When I could quite easily walk down to the rental store and pick up one for 200-400yen...

I want the mirehoudai... All you can watch subscription model like HBO or Starz on broadband. BUt that VOD is a step in the right direction.

From what I heard, there is a huge obstacle to TV (and radio) over the net. There is some sort of dispute with performers' unions over royalties for internet performances, they've refused to budge over demands for additional royalties for online works. Media companies haven't got an adequate way to measure online ratings, it's a lot fuzzier than just measuring hits, performers want to use the highest metrics, media companies want to use the lowest, it's an impasse. So the media companies just refuse to put anything up online beyond the news programs, which are done by their own employees and they can negotiate any contract they want. So you're not going to get music, dramas, or other programming online. You will get news and self-produced documentaries.

I could be wrong, things could have changed since I last looked into it. But that's how I understand it.
