Sup people

Postby voltage » Wed Jul 07, 2004 8:06 am

Wasup all. I was looking for information on Japanese banks and I came across this site, looks like it'll be a good forum for a FG like me.

I'll be going to Tokyo to study for a year in August. Lookin forward to it. If anyone has any tips or links to threads with tips thatd be great.

The banks here suck. They close at three and even the ATM's go to bed early. The simplest transaction can take hours. They hire tons of people whose job it is to stand around and do nothing. They are completely non-international and whatever you need they can't do it. They pay no interest or even charge you for having a savings account. Even though they do have cute girls the person you'll get stuck with is an old fart with seriously grotesque oyaji rot (bad breath). If there is any obscure bureaucratic restriction deep in the vaults that can make your experience more difficult they will certainly dig it up.
I hope that helps.

LOL

I think I'm just going to start have a Citibank account to withdraw from since I saw lots of Citibank branches last time I was there. And if I really need a bank account there then....well...we'll see.

Wow thats impressive an FG who doesnt live in Japan, how does that work?.
I especially like the 2 fellows who work in the bank near me. Their job seemingly is to sit, not stand, in reception, and take their shoes off when it gets a bit hot.
They sometimes greet people, but id say only 1 in 20, and when asked a question by someone they wave them over to reception. They also spend a lot of time bringing each other cups of tea.
Why does every gaijin i meet want to talk about anime?
Do i have to buy a T-Shirt saying " I HATE ANIME"???

Do you mean have a Citibank account in the states and withdraw in Japan? Well, I don't think it's that easy. At least it didn't used to be. Same thing going the other way around: I can walk into a Mitsubishi bank or Sanwa or whatever here in California but I can't access an account I opened in Japan at one of their banks.

Really though, banks don't suck too bad. And citibank is a good one - you may get lucky and find an english speaker there. But learning enough kanji to use the ATMs (do Citibank atms close early too? they used to be 24hours) will save you much time.

Well, I had an account I opened in Japan and had an ATM card where I could (and did) withdraw money in Taiwan, California and elsewhere when I travelled. But then I heard they stopped that sort of thing or made a limit to the amount one could access abroad. Glad to hear it's easier these days. I wonder if one can actually deposit to a U.S. based account from a bank in Japan? How about cashing a check? Can you do that at a Citibank in Japan now? For example, an IRS tax refund check?
(I once was sent a check and had to go to an office in a building in Roppongi that housed the "branch" of that bank in tokyo - i don't remember what bank it was, maybe bank of america. this was like 1993).

Last time I was there for a summer I remember withdrawing at Citibank ATMs with no problem from my Wells Fargo account.

Unless I get a job or something I probably won't need to open an account at a Japanese bank. Just outta curiosity, what's the biggest/most common bank there?

I'm thinking if I do end up getting a Japanese bank account that the most common one will be the most convenient. I have Wamu and Wells here just for that reason.

In Tokyo just about any of the big banks (Tokyo Mitsubushi, UFJ etc.) will do but considering that Japanese bank pay zero interest and charge extortionate transfer fees your probably better off using Citibank.

I have a Citibank/ Postal Savings account and it works well overseas.

"SUP"

What the hell kind of greeting is that? :shake:

This would have to be one of my least favourite words - if you can call it a word. Honestly!! English is a fantastic language when used correctly and this is an affront to my delicate sensibilities. 8O

OK it is hot in Tokyo today, I couldn't sleep last night and I am tired and cranky so I am over-reacting somewhat. :?

BTW hello and welcome to the board.

Though you may hate the word "Sup" it is highly functional in modern American slang, much like the work "fuck". I don't know about Australia, as British, Australian, etc. slang does tend to baffle me. As an American from the West Coast of the country where the atmosphere is highly informal, it is part of my daily language and I certainly would refrain from using such vernacular in many cases, but the name of this website "Fucked Gaijin" doesn't exactly warrant the need for myself to use such proper language.

In any case, looking forward to Japan but not the summer heat. :D

I am also an American and I have never used the word "sup". I lived in OC for some time and I have never had anyone use "sup" to me. I find it such an odd word. This just shows how out of the times I am. Then again, I never did like slang. I must be getting old. ( *~* )

My point is, "Fuck" is a much more universal word as far as slang goes. It is used by every English speaking person as well as others.. even the French use it. "Sup" is really more of a limited-use slang used only by "ghetto" type teenagers. It is not in any way as highly functional in modern American English as "Fuck". This is the reason many people think poorly of anyone who uses the word "sup". The First thing that comes to mind is a trouble maker. I do not say this in regards to you, I just want to make clear the reason why some may not like it.

Indeed. I partially agree with your statement, in that it did does have its roots in inner city, urban, "ghetto" subcultures, but these days, hip-hop and rap dominates radio airwaves and is probably consists of 85% of the music I hear in clubs, and therefore permeates through popular culture rather quickly. I am not saying that "sup" has as broad of uses as "fuck", I was merely attempting to relate it to another word. "Fuck", I believe, has possibly the widest number of uses in modern English slang.

I am from the SF Bay Area, go to school in San Diego, and my girlfriend is from LA, and believe me, I've been to every major metropolitan area in California, including the OC, and can say with confidence that I can say "sup" to nearly anyone under the age of 30 without anyone thinking twice about it. But that's just me...

Things have changed. I moved out of California in late 2000. All I can say is I might be getting old. Then again, hip-hop was never my thing. I think my watch died in 1987. I need to change the battery. ( ^ v ^ )

As for the bank thing... I found it best to use the ATM at the post office and when you need to deposit money, wire or mail a money order home and have someone deposit for you.

Shall we sup with the Joneses tonight, darling?

Postby djgizmoe » Wed Jul 07, 2004 3:09 pm

I got a Citibank account in Tokyo, and it worked pretty good when I went to Hawaii (I could ATM from it), but there is a rather large minimum balance ($2-3000, I think) that you have to maintain at all times (or pay a fee). I neglected to officially close my account after I took all the money from it...Hope that doesn't end up biting me in the ass later on...

I'm always late to the really cool topics.

Using a word like "sup" cuts out tons of bullshit. By starting your coversation with "Sup." You can bypass formal introductions, chitchat and talking about the weather saving yourself 10 minutes. It's a friendly word for the young.

that said]

"What's Up" works better for people who speak English as a second language in general. With that said, last time I was in Shinjuku one of the African guys trying to promote a club came up to me and I said "sup" and he was shocked (since I look Asian, I must be Japanese). Of course, he couldn't play it off like he was from the US like they do to most people, it was obvious he had an African accent.

I can't believe introducing myself led to such a (relatively) long thread. At least now everybody knows me
