Need advice for a cheap trip to Tokyo

Postby Kaibutsu » Mon Jul 12, 2004 4:05 pm

I realize that cheap and Tokyo is practically an oxymoron, but my plan is to stay at someplace like Hotel New Koyo, and eat at yakitori and noodle stalls, get bento from konbini etc.

Can anyone tell me any cheap places to eat, sleep, and shop in Tokyo?(Specific restaraunts,hotels/motels and stores.)

Also, any suggestions on getting a really cheap airfare, would be greatly
appreciated.

The rough budget I've got figured is about $2000-$2500 bucks.(I'm willing to sacrifice about half of the above figure for plane fare. Though,I'd love to find a 700 dollar fare.)

What I mainly want to do while I'm there is not just do the touristy thing like check out Tokyo Tower, the Imperial Garden, etc, but also check out some of the more bizarre things and places in Tokyo that Steve Schultz documents on Tokyo Damage report.

Edit:The budget I've made is for about 7-10 days.

Thanks for your time.

Living The Cheap Life

Bring a tent + Sleep in Ueno Park..
Eat @ McDonalds and conbinis - 4 packs of 5 Chicken Nuggets for Y100 a day plus an energy drink or bag of energy jelly should satisfiy all your dietary needs..
Shop for clothes at Uniqlo..
Only pay the child fare when taking the train.. or buy (or better still: steal) a bike..

..or you could just hook up with some obaachan for food and lodging - obaachans cooking is the best!! Theyre usually very lonely so in most cases your presence will be payment enough... and in other situations... well....

Try a Karaoke place. They rent rooms for late night hours in some parts of town dirt cheap. Cost less than a love hotel and great if you miss the last train. Only issue, you will need to take a bath in the toilet....

No sweat...notice I'm the only person to answer since everyone is burned out from answering the same qustion over and over.

I wish there was a better way to discuss this Cheap-Lodging question such as making it a "Sticky" thread since the topic comes up every few days now. Search "hostels" "ryokan" and "minshiku" besides "love hotels".

Stay herehttp://sakura-hotel.co.jp/ , i live accross the street, so i can pick you off with my air-gun as you come and go.
TYO is a cheap city, just stick to Yoshinoya and Raman joints and you can get by on Y1200 a day, eating 4 meals.
Why does every gaijin i meet want to talk about anime?
Do i have to buy a T-Shirt saying " I HATE ANIME"???

And HOW!!

I've never told my mom this, but I prefer my Japanese mother-in-law's cooking. She can cook her fat ass OFF I tell you.

And her daughters are no slouches either.

capsule hotels are pretty cheap, and they usually have a bath you can use. Most of them (all?) are male-only though, and you need to get there early to get a capsule. I think you can get either 5 hours or 10 hours at lots of them.

 That's funny AO. I know how you feel. Fatties know how to cook!

Before I actually done gone and did it (got married) in Japan, I was engaged with a Greek girl for a while. Her mother was the greatest cook I ever knew. Don't tell my wife.

From Birmingham,Alabama. I guess Atlanta,Georgia would probably be the best place to leave from though, if I wanted as few stops as possible.

I appreciate any advice you can offer.
