Korea Opens Pilot Web Portal, Glitches Remain
Wed Jul 14, 2004 02:53 AM ET
SEOUL (Reuters) -
Reclusive North Korea has been testing its first Web portal for the past month, but so far visitors have not been able to access the entertainment, shopping and free email facilities it promises.
The Naenara ("My Country") site at www.kcckp.net is based in Germany, and links to information on North Korean politics, tourism and trade, along with its official media and "real time" musics and movies decorate the home page.
The Web site, available in English and Korean...

My favorite part is the "We are one" image on the left. We all know North and South Korea are *basically* united.
Why do the Japanese always have to have a favorite saying?

And I thought I knew all about car companies and religions

Postby Watcher » Sun Jul 18, 2004 8:03 am

I had never ever heard of that Pyonghwa motors company so I tried to follow up your link... but they wouldn't let me in without a password/registration... now check what I did find on google.

Pyonghwa Motors (in Korean: 평화) is originally a South Korean car importer, which set up a car producing joint-venture with the North Korean Ryonbong General Corp. in Nampo.

Since most North Koreans do not know how to drive nor are financially able to own a car, the cars are aimed at the few foreigners and governmental officials. Also Pyonghwa plans to export cars to China, Vietnam and South Korea.

Pyonghwa has the exclusive rights to car production and buy and sell used cars in North Korea.

Stockholders
70% Pyonghwa Motors (Seoul) (owned by the Unification Church)
30% Ryonbong Corp.

Car models
Hwiparam (휘파람 - Whistle) - based on the Fiat Siena
Ppeokkugi (뻐꾸기 - Cuckoo) - based on the Fiat Doblo

History
1999, April - founded by the Unification Church
2000, January - the joint-venture with Ryonbong is announced
2002, April - first production line in Nampo was complete and the first Hwiparam was produced

Now as for me... I can't decide if I'd want the Whistle (is that the sound it makes from air leaks in the door seals?) or the Cuckoo (which requires no comments... except maybe they are trying to top the Japanese car names mentioned in another thread).

Taking it farther

Postby Watcher » Sun Jul 18, 2004 8:12 am

I may be hijacking this thread for all this car stuff but it blows me away... First it was the web portal and now we have a commercial...

Pyonghwa has been promoting its cars on the streets of Pyeongyang with billboard advertising. "It is the first time anyone has put up a commercial billboard in the North," says Mr. Kim. The billboard shows a North Korean boy next to a Hwiparam expressing "happiness and awe," a facial expression North Koreans usually reserve for their "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-il.

And farther still

Postby Watcher » Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:04 am

And who is the father of the Unification Church? The new Messiah himself, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, crowned right on the steps of the Senate (How do you like that AK?)... how deep does this go?

I'm real shook-up about it.

BTW, I used to be so jealous of all those guys that got married on his mass wedding day a while back. Remember that? I felt like those guys just had pussy handed to them on a platter. Moonies are pretty cool. I wish I was a cult leader. It would all be very sexual, that's for sure. And there'd be two leaders, me and my beautiful cock.
