E-mail Software on Windows

Postby Blah Pete » Fri Jul 30, 2004 9:14 am

I have been using Netscape for email at home and at work for about 10 years but the time has come to switch. I don't want to use a Microsoft product because every major virus that comes out seems to attack Outlook only.

What are other FG's using with W2K or XP? What software do you like or dislike?

YES!
Use anything but Microsoft's own email products which carry a high virus attack risk.

For the Japanese and English combo in the workplace, I also use the free "Thunderbird". Eudora is ok too (with little Kanji screw-ups from time to time) and very good for filtering. Japanese folks looove the plane-jane "Becky" email client.

Bottom Line: Play it safe]Thunderbird[/url].

Becky is light, clean, and never gets in the way. It has very low CPU and RAM needs. All and I mean ALL my Japanese friends use it.

Likewise, in the category of superfast and light email clients is 'The Bat!'

Becky
Becky is an email client developed by RimArts, a Japanese company. It supports POP3 and IMAP, and seems to have a number of very satisfied users. Becky is free for 30 days.

'The Bat!' The Bat! has a Bayesian filtering for spam and for handling large volumes of e-mail.

Eudora
Very popular free-and-pay-versions email software that is available in Windows, Macintosh --- great filtering and organizing email.

Don't forget the rather nice Japanese made Sylpheed. It supports kanji properly, but I think it has been kind of eclipsed by Mozilla Thunderbird ...

Avant browser is much faster, smaller and has a lot more functions than firefox. You can also use the google bar with it if you like.

Nah, thanks to the comments I heard from different people - and this very site - I went with Firefox and have been thoroughly pleased. Heck, in an age of readily acquired 'free' software, I'd even pay for Firefox - I'm that satisfied.

A reviewer on WinPlanet wrote:All in all, Avant certainly is a step forward from the more stripped-down Internet Explorer, which many are tempted to continue using simply because it came with their machines. For a new look and some new functionality at no additional cost, Avant makes for a relatively simple upgrade. Installation is fast and easy, and any experienced IE user will have it up and running in just minutes.

But on the other hand: Why bother?

I agree. I'll stick with Firefox, thank you.

NP...Stay with what you like.

Although, that comment about AB is not very precise.
AB has tabs, groups, so you can put say, all your forums in their and open all of them in one go, and lay them out in a number of ways at teh click of a button. It also has the ability for you to switch the menus to loads of languages which is handy if someone needs to use it in Japanese.

As I said, stay with what works for you.
