I think you hit the nail on the head there as two Japanese men failed to win a medal in judo recently but were not told the same thing.
Perhaps they are going to throw them out of the airplane on the way back.

Ha.....

She just won a gold medal.
However, that is beside the point.

In World and Olympic events generally if a Japanese Judoka fails to get a medal he or she is never picked again.

On the one hand I can see that it might work because there is such a large pool of high level players in Japan compared to other countries it's a good way to uncover potential talent. And in a interesting way its sort of going against the Japanese tradition of seniors holding on to their position far beyond their 'sell by' date.

However it doesn't allow for players to mature and improve over time by having the experience of competing at that level. This happened to one of my teachers who had a great run of wins at national and international level but never got the Olympic nod or any more recognition after one off performance due to injury. He was 'retired' at age 25.

He's an idiot but your suggested recourse isn't much better. Sue? It's too trivial for the courts.

[In World and Olympic events generally if a Japanese Judoka fails to get a medal he or she is never picked again. ]

That's not quite exact. a member from my office Ogawa Naoya won a bronze and was selected again. The following Olympics he neglected to bring home such an omiyagi and was harassessed, but prior to becoming a pro-K1 or wrestling or what ever that yaocho is called, he was approached by the J-Olympic committee members and asked to re-consider quiting the sport as he would be their standard bearer for Sydney.

The truth of the matter was, that he was so badgered and harassed in the office by a certain bunch of people with the atheletic and intellectual abilities of a lower form of invertebrates, slugs come to mind, that he finally resigned after about a year of this treatment. Unfortunately, that just added to the fuel of "no yamato damashi" not withstanding the fact that he was a seven-time world champion. No Gold Medal:?:
