And now a filthy big grounded cargo ship ...

... The Vihan05, a 5,552-ton Vietnamese cargo ship, is stranded off Uchiumi village, western Japan, after it ran aground in 10-metre-high waves ... Photo: AP

Funny you mentioned the Captain ...

The Exxon Valdez ... was repaired after the spill but was banned from Alaskan waters by an act of Congress ... Today the ship carries oil from the Middle East to Europe ... The ship is no longer called the Exxon Valdez, though. Exxon removed its name from all its tankers following the Alaska spill. The Exxon Valdez is now known as the Sea River Mediterranean. As for Captain Hazelwood, he stood trial on several criminal counts. He admitted drinking before boarding the ship but argued he was not drunk, and an Alaska jury agreed. The captain's only conviction in the case was for negligently discharging oil. He was fined $50,000 and this summer will begin performing 1,000 hours of community service, picking up litter along Alaska highways...(from Living on Earth)

I believe my signature and its related photo apply to the Captain.

The guys on the floor above me work in a major shipping firm and say there's more to that Kyodo story about, "Four of its 20 crew members were thrown into the sea and are missing. " They think the four jumped ship and weren't "swept away" as claimed.

Hazelwood story.

Agh, what a waste of time if so. The Omae Mona reconnaissance team in Uchiumi-mura reports back to me that the day after the storm there were about a dozen boats out the whole day searching. So the local folks, so far, have been completely fooled, if those guys are actually hiding away somewhere.

I don't buy it. I know the coast down there and trust me if they tried to jump ship during that typhoon their brains would be fish bait, which is the principle reason they are not likely to be found in anything other than 9-11 sized pieces. Even if they pulled an "unauthorized shore leave" they would spotted in a second in a peckertown like Uchiumi
