In July, four sixth graders disappeared, apparently kidnapped by a man trying to lure them into prostitution. After one of the girls escaped several days later, the man killed himself before the police arrived. The girls were freed, but the episode led to national hand-wringing.

Indeed, alongside the agents with clipboards, other kinds of agents --- known here in Japanized English as "scout" or "catch"--- can be seen in broad daylight approaching girls on either side of pubescence.

"Every scout is trying to get a girl into his business," said Kazuhiro Kakuta, a Shibuya regular. "There's the store scout, the restaurant scout, the sex business scout, the entertainment industry scout, the fashion magazine scout."

Mr. Kakuta knows. Better known as "Jimmy," he has stood on Shibuya's main street every day for the last nine years. He shows photos of celebrities from albums tied to his waist with strings. He gives out Band-Aids. He passes out candy....

Oh how I hate those guys... sometimes they are so agressive and will attempt to physically restrain their target if she is not interested and tries to ignore them...

I have been known on many occassions to abuse the guy on behalf of the prey with a stern "dame" and some other colourful language.. like, "take your hands off her and get a real job, loser".

Too many girls just try to run away rather than give the creeps what they deserve.

Surely this sort of thing is illegal, but the guys are so brazen, they stand in front of a koban and hunt their prey. They are completely out of line.. if somebody is not interested, you don't chase them down the street.

I agree with you guys. But... if that guy, and others, have been doing it for nine years, there must be a steady stream (read: a lot) of young girls ready to go for their 'business' pitches. Very sleazy. Interesting take on this in the relatively recent film "Bounce Kogals".

It 'is' getting bad though. I told a female japanese friend here in the states that I was considering getting an apartment in shibuya and she goes on this rant about how it's full of young kids (subtext: girls), and there's a red light district, and I shouldn't really be in that area, blah, blah. I'm like, "er, I know shibuya, it's not that bad if you're not looking for that kind of thing." Jeez, is shibuya headed towards being labeled as the new kabukicho?

What these girls need are fathers, brothers and boyfriends who can step-up and be a man. If these slimeballs knew that if the male members of these girls' family might be back looking for them with baseball bats they wouldn't be so brazen. Sometimes in life you gotta be willing to fight anybody, whether it's the some gang or the yakuza or the police or whoever, even if you might die. If someone is messing with, say your underaged little sister, it's one of those times.

I was walking around Shibuya on my lunch hour. I was approached by a slime ball who asked me in perfect English...

I wonder why you assume it was a Japanese person that approached you? From my experience, the active solicitors tend to be Chinese. I've even met a coupla them from Taiwan who spoke fluent Japanese. I've also been solicited by Korean scouts too.

Here's a true story. It's 9:00 p.m. at night and I'm walking down the street with three of my Caucasian Gaijin friends. I get approached by a scout who first starts talking Korean to me. Then he switches to Mandarin. He finally finishes in Japanese. All the while I never opened my mouth to let him know what nationality I was. Yep. You guys are right on the mark. Heck, just in the last two weeks I read two different stories about japanese policemen being arresting themselves for taking upskirt phonecam photos of women who went to them for help (directions, etc.). I agree about the many politicians probably being children hunters, it's the only way I can make sense out of why in such a rigid, rule based society, child prostitution runs rampant like a third world country. These old dudes in power are 'definitely' having sex with hundreds of underage girls, I think this is japan's dark secret in the same way that priests molesting alter boys was a dark secret until recently. This also would help to explain why japanese women leave japan at twice the rate of men. Before, I used to hear so many japanese women insulting/degrading older japanese men, and I'd sort of admonish them and say they shouldn't do that. But now, having some on the ground experience with japan over the last few years, I get it. It is very sad.

this is a good topic as it is a great concern for me also. I am married with a 5 year old daughter. I would go nuts if someone tried to pimp out my daughter in 10 years. Someone mentioned why doesnt the father, brother or boyfriend do anything? cause these guys dont have balls! it is pathetic. I am from Australia and I can tell you if there was one of those fags doing what they do in my country if the law didnt get them then the victims relatives/friends would. Actually a year and a half ago my wife was getting a tan at a salon. Anyhow there was a peeping tom looking as she was changing under the wall that seperated the rooms (there was like a 4-5 inch gap from the ground up for air to travel through). Anyhow this was around at night. She called me and I came over. I made sure about the facts. The guy was guilty. I kicked the shit outa him. The cops came. The knew the truth but said they could not do anything so they let both of us off. The owner of the salon (a 40year old guy) didnt give a shit.
Pretty damn sad country!
