Postby katakori » Mon Oct 04, 2004 11:28 am

will be moving to shibuya-ku. what should i get? i want to be able to surf fast and download fast, but don't need to install a datacenter in my room. therefore, i am not talking about the fastest service but rather the best service/price ratio. any suggestions?

My ASDL modem got hit by lightning 2-3 weeks ago and the bastards in NTT still haven't replaced it. I only log-on via work or by using the open WiFi from my neighbors (thanks to Caustic's previous help).

You should try stealing stealing WiFi from your neighbors too since Shibuya is so densely populated.

Otherwise, go just down to the closest big electronics store near your new place and look at their "coverage" maps and rate charts posted on the wall. If you get a hold of a good geek working in the store, he will know which deal is the best for your specific neighborhood (some areas are crap for ADSL).

 Free is often available with cable TV packages. You need cable (foreign) TV to remain sane in Japan, so you might as well get the package with cable Internet.

 The cheapest is generally YahooBB, but no English help is offered.

 The fastest is generally 100Mb fiber from NTT ---> better yet a private carrier like Tokyo Electric or Usen fiber (which is depends on your specific location and neighborhood). Sometimes the private carriers offer "special deals" for upscale neighborhoods.

Definitely recommend yahoobb. I had no problems so far, the connection is steady and fast (it depends on how far you are from the local ntt building though).
No english support provided that's true but you can apply via bbapply.com which was poreviously linked here(that's how i found about it).
The site explains everything and the guy even if not paid by yahoo to do the support is fairly quick at answering questions and solving eventual problems.

Getting the 100mbit fiber finally installed in my new place sometime next week. Gotta love that speed. The installation is what hits you at around 30000yen. And there is nothing asyncronous about the fiber, 100 up and down.
:D

Yahoo!BB is the best ADSL. Period.
The reason being is that it uses DSLAM's from UTStarcomm that has improved the ADSL algorithms to be the best service level available.

It is equivalent to an airline that has the newest fleet of Boeing aircraft -- which would you fly?
It seems you would be a fool to go with NTT. :o

As taro says Yahoo!BB is also the best deal because it includes the cable.

And here's the pricing for the new YahooBB fiber.

Softbank group to begin fiber-optic Internet access service
Kyodo / Oct 05
Softbank BB Corp. and Yahoo Japan Corp. said Monday they will accept applications for their joint fiber-optic Internet access service for home use, starting Tuesday....
...Its fiber-optic cables can offer an access speed of up to 1 gigabit per second, the world's fastest and 10 times faster than fiber-optic services provided by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., the two companies said....
....Standard monthly charges for a detached house will be 7,234 yen, the partners said.
Competing fiercely with NTT in the telecommunications and Internet access service markets, the Softbank group "aims to outstride NTT" in the fiber-optic business, said Softbank President Masayoshi Son....

J-Com

Postby Mini_B » Tue Oct 05, 2004 10:54 pm

J-Com Broadband isn't bad. Call them and check if they provide service to your building. If so, they set it up quick, provide internet, TV and phone. Phone isn't the best...but it's cheap compared to buying a NTT line. I heard that soon you won't have to buy a line...but not positive about that.
