Photo of actress Takano Shiho

Postby SF'd Gaijin » Tue Jul 27, 2004 8:34 am

Fellow FGs in Japan,

Looking for photos of actress Takano Shiho. She was in a morning drama on Japanese TV about a year or two ago called "Sakura." About a Hawaiin Japanese American girl who goes to Japan to teach English and ends up staying in Japan. This is just now showing here in SF and would appreciate if any of you could post a photo on this thread.

I'll admit it without shame. She is so dainty and cute and I've been trying to find a photo or two for my collection. Better if you could find her and get an autograph for me. :D

Thanks much,

SF'd Gaijin

I presume you mean this lady. She wasn't too popular with some of the weeklies who took to calling her 'pinhead' I don't know why...

Steve and T.T.

Thanks for the photos.

Also, I found more hits on google after your suggestion with changing the safesearch preferences to Japanese language.

She comes across as a very sweet girl in the Sakura series still going on here on Fuji TV. I think a different hairstyle may make a big difference with the "pinhead" look.

Now if you could help get the autograph for me in person...........

:D

Thanks again.

About Takano Shiho

Postby himedaruma » Mon Oct 11, 2004 3:44 pm

Is really "Sakura" showing in SF? Is it still on air?
I recently moved to LA and became very happy to find the rental video shop where I was able to rent the videotapes of "Sakura". I came to the US about two years ago, so I could not finish watching that drama and was eager to see incredibly pretty smiles of Takano Shiho-san.

I can find some pages where you can see her pretty smiles. Are they helpful?

It's on Channel 26, Cable Channel 8 on Saturday nights at 9:00 p.m. PST. I think there are two more episodes left to air. Every two episodes, they switch to another letter of the alphabet. I think last week and this week was Y. The only letter left now is Z.

Thanks for the photos....

As bejita mentioned, the episodes are up to the second letter Y for yellow so we are getting to Z. This has been airing in the Bay Area for almost a year now on channel 26. I'm not sure I could watch all of the series again as it would take days. Her smile has grown on me....she is really cute.

Thanks

Sakura

Postby himedaruma » Wed Oct 13, 2004 2:38 pm

Are you watching the drama in English, in Japanese, or in Japanese with English subtitle? It is hard for me to believe that the whole drama was translated into English, but if so I would like to watch it again in English or with English subtitle.

Is the channel one of the Cable Television in entire United States or limited in SF? I am in LA now and it is possible to rent the whole videotapes of that drama here.

That drama successufully described the traditional culture in Takayama, Hida Region, but it might be even insulting to the Japanese-Americans in Hawaii. None of the 4-sei in Hawaii can speak perfect Japanese like Sakura does. Takano Shiho apparently has British accent and does not speak English with Hawaian accent... The roman between Mr. Katsuragi and Sakura is far from American romances, even if Katsuragi is a conservative samurai. It is said that there are too many problems about the description of the Japanese-Americans in Hawaii.

However, the most important part of that drama is of course the heroine. I don't know any other Japanese actress who has such a cute and innocent smile, and matches very well with such a boyish style and short hair. Most actresses look ugly if they cut their hair so short. :P

The last few episodes are coming up next week. They all have English subtitles...on Channel 26 (Cable channel eight) in the San Francisco Bay Area. The problem with renting or buying it is that it goes on forever and some of the episodes are pretty bad while others are good.

The family in Hawaii certainly does not represent the real thing. I didn't notice Sakura having and English accent....how did that get started? She really is a cute lady....even with the short hair. In one of the later episodes she is wearing a wig to disguise herself. She looked beautiful with long hair.......which just goes to prove she would look good with longer hair as well.

I've purchased a few dramas, but I don't think I could sit through this one again.

It is amazing for me to hear that the whole drama was already translated into English.
Where did you buy the videotapes? Do you think it is possible for me to order them?

Unfortunately, it is said that she has not had jobs so constantly since Sakura. I think it is because she is too pure for lowbrow dramas in recent years.

But it may mean we can expect the responses directly from her if we send her a letter.

I have been buying a few dramas on ebay, but haven't seen Sakura for sale. Do an advanced search on seller "gingertoys2" and you can find recent dramas with English subtitles.

The local Fuji TV channel is about to wrap up Sakura next week. I think it is for sale on yesasia.com but for over $200 and it may not be playable in the US as it is Region 2 only (Japan and Europe).

Let me know if you have any luck with locating any more info.

Happy Birthday

Postby himedaruma » Sat Oct 23, 2004 4:40 pm

Her birthday was the day before yesterday (October 21th). I didn't know that. She was born on Sunday, October 21, 1979, so we may be able to celebrate her birthday 24th. :P

She says that she wants to be the actress like Winona Ryder(!). Of course it does not mean that she wants to be a shoplifter. According to what she says Mrs. Ryder is good at performing wide variety of different roles.

Her another aim is Kishi Keiko. She is a good actress.

I am now doing the internship regarding translation and translated a brief document from Columbia Pictures. I didn't know so much about "Memoirs of a Geisha", and had thought that plan was completely abandoned after Spielberg quit.
I got so disappointed to hear that the heroin would be performed by a Chinese actress. It is not acceptable for Japanese people.

Was there no possibility that Takano Shino would be the heroin in that movie? She has no problem about English, but Hollywood may not think that she would be able to perform such a kind of dirty role (Geisha) and it may be true. She is so innocent and pure.
