"Tokyo Cowboys"

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Oct 25, 2004 12:05 pm

New documentary about FGs "Tokyo Cowboys"

The idea for Tokyo Cowboys manifested itself out of an inability to describe in words the Tokyo experience. Film seemed to be the most honest way to communicate the enigma that is Tokyo and the strange and beautiful existence of the long-term foreign residents.
How did you get the idea for Tokyo Cowboys?
The idea started as a drunken joke between BG and myself. He thought it was a good idea for me to address my Tokyo demons and offered me $5,000 to shoot anything I wanted to in Tokyo.
Who are the Tokyo Cowboys?
The Cowboys are a group of guys I know in Tokyo. What makes them Cowboys is a sort of ethic that defines them. They don't want to be like other people...they want to do their own thing no matter how crazy it is.
Can I be a Tokyo Cowboy?
If you mean, can you be in the film, then no. We've finished principal photography.

The film is still in post-production. Some clips are up on the website Here. The clip for Cloudy Bongwater shows him using his "hammock seat" on a JR train. An invention already spotted by Caustic and posted in "Random Gaijin" Here

It looks like Caustic wins the "Spot the Cowboy" Campaign they are having.

The "Spot a Cowboy" campaign is your chance to get your pictures and stories on the Tokyo Cowboys web site. If you spot one of our 13 Cowboys, snap a picture of him with your mobile phone and email it to us. Tell us the story of where you spotted him and under what circumstances. We'll publish your picture and your story on the website...

Now for the "Pongi Paradox":
How are they going to stitch those clips into a film that's more than the sum of it's parts?

I like the idea of this movie and would definitely watch it but that's because of my own experience. However, the clips on that website that I looked at didn't exactly draw me in.

I dunno. It'd probably be more effort than it's worth to copy, paste and email that blog entry... :D

and here are the "cowboys".
For 90% of them their first job in japan was (drum roll) English Teacher. And after checking each profile quickly you'll noticed that now half of them are (drum roll) Head Hunters.
I mean wow those guys really don't want to be like other people that's for sure.

Congratulations. Not an easy thing to do. I'll see your film for that reason alone. I think you are right to get a different side to Cloudy. I saw a him on Japanese TV a few years ago when they did a feature on his relationship with his daughter (if I remember correctly). That was far more interesting than seeing him just mugging for the camera.
Good luck and post again if you have any updates on your site or release schedule/venue info.

For some reason, about once a year something happens to remind me of this film, so I track it down on google. Looks like they are getting close to a release, perhaps.

Does anyone know what Dave's wife is doing for him in 'Broken Promise'?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize for being a bit off topic again but...

Years back a friend recommended a novel about FGs written by an FG who had spent a few years here. It wasn't much of a good read but it was funny how you could match the book's bubble-era characters, at least in part, to gaijin you knew. I can't remember the name of it.
There was the martial arts fag, the bar-running-FG lifer-cowboy-biker, etc.
Gaijin out in the sticks would try to spin images of themselves because they thought the Japanese people would buy it. Kind of like Charisma Men.
Of course, I never did anything like this...
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

Funny, I was just wondering what happened to it last week. Not that I want to see it. The trailers make it look boring as hell.
