"Doing" New Years Eve is like spending Christmas Eve in the western world: It's a family time, not a party time.

Having said that, there is plenty to do in Japan for the New Years Eve:
Visting temples, mountain tops, and the like to do the "honorable first" everything of the year with zillions of other Japanese.

Read the old FG thread where we all discussed this in length:
A very FG Christmas?

Hey Gomi,
Did you go to 'nam last year? How was X-mess in Saigon?

You can visit temples on New Years (Eve?) they build big bonfires and ring bells and bang gongs and stuff. It's pretty neat. Ask around. They'll be lots of stuff going on in Tokyo I'm sure. Sorry I don't know anything more specific but I'll bet some folks on here will be in the know as it gets closer. Have a nice trip.

I used to pop over to Ueno Park in Tokyo for the 108 Peals of the Bell. Other years I've seen the sunrise from the top of Mt Takao's temple and the bonfires on the beach of Kamakura in the shadow of the Big Buddha. I even did the Polar Bear Swim there one year with all the wild naked priests, local guys (and even few girls). Problem: I'm a total polar bear but as a Brazillian you might die from exposure during the New Years fun.

Of course, Meiji Shine is ground zero for craziness: 1.4 million Japanese visited for New Years last year.

I was in 'nam from the 26th Dec until the 6th Jan. So did New Year in Saigon. It was completely nuts and I highly recommend it. It is the wedding season so there were dozens of wedding outfits to check out and there was lots of cheer and good-will to share. The Vietnamese are a happy bunch of folks at the best of times, but during weddings and New Year it seems that everybody is doubly so. The streets were packed with scooters - I mean packed - with 100's of thousands of scooters putting along the streets. I have never seen so many scooters with whole families of 4 and 5 on them. Everybody is just driving around smiling and waving at everybody else. It was sensational. It is one of the smiliest New Year's that I have experienced.

I will be in Thailand this year for X-mas and Cambodia for New Year so any suggestions are most welcome.

New Years' Eve - I usually go to bed quite early after a couple of Frangelico laced hot chocolates - NYE is always a disappointment - I guess when you come from a country when it's summer and there are fireworks and lots of running around in skimpy party dresses.

Many shines offer free amazake at New Years. The bonfires, sake and free mochi make the trip to the Fox shrine of Ueno New Years Eve worth the trip.
(Please be warned, the shrine bonfires which are for burning last year's good luck charms release 10-zillion times the legal amount a dioxin smoke since the charms use toxic plastics and paints.)

The Heart of Darkness bar in Phnom Penh would be the easy choice if you can't find anything else to do.

If he did it, he got off lightly.

If he didn't, I feel for him.

I'm leaning toward the "he did it" opinion myself though.
