Reuters: Thai PM turns to origami to solve southern violence
By Nopporn Wong-Anan BANGKOK, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Struggling to end 10 months of unrest and bloodshed in Thailand's Muslim south, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has turned to origami to shore up support for his security policies ahead of a 2005 general election. The unconventional peace initiative, in which 63 million Thais are being urged to make paper birds to stop the violence which has claimed nearly 500 lives, has become an overnight national sensation with everyone from children to soldiers. Around 10,000 troops in the south and hundreds of thousands of health ministry volunteers are busily folding paper birds.
Electronic road signs in Bangkok are urging Thais to get folding, so the Air Force can "bomb" the south with a hoped for 63 million symbols of goodwill on Dec. 5 to mark the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Thaksin's origami scheme is not favoured by all. "I disagree with the idea of making birds from banknotes and sending them to Muslims because Muslims never help non-Muslims," wrote one person..."Therefore we should put spells on pieces of paper we use to make birds for those vicious Muslims." Recipients of the gesture in the deep south...also want something more concrete. "Paper birds mean nothing here," said Narathiwat Islamic Council President Abdulrahman Abdulsahad.

Origami for Peace Bombs Out in Thailand..

Thai Military Drops Origami for Peace
Associated Press, December 5, 2004, 5:28 PM EST
BANGKOK, Thailand --
In a novel approach to peacemaking -- and damage control -- Thai warplanes dropped millions of folded paper cranes over the country's troubled southern provinces, expressing hope for an end to the separatist violence that has killed hundreds in the Muslim-dominated region....
....the campaign didn't stop the violence. A 22-pound bomb was discovered -- and safely defused -- Sunday on a road crowded with people waiting to gather the paper cranes, a peace symbol borrowed from Japan....
...A festival-like atmosphere prevailed in many areas in the south, as children raced to grab the birds. Young and old alike were excited at the prospect of finding the one bird folded and signed by Shinawatra, which carries the promise of a scholarship if found by a child, or a job for an adult.

Those wacky Muslims are at it again.

TALOH KAPO, Thailand - Customers no longer come to Kaboh Sulong's teashop — not since two gunmen walked in at noon, coldly shot a Buddhist cloth vendor, cut off his head and left it in a sack outside.

Ten days later Sulong was still terrified as he pointed to a wooden table where Lek Pongpla was relaxing when the attackers killed him. And all around him, Buddhists were packing and fleeing the worsening violence in Thailand's Muslim-majority south.

Beheadings and bombings are pushing tensions to a boiling point since a long-simmering Muslim separatist movement launched an armed struggle early last year that has left more than 860 people dead.

It doesn't matter where in the world you are. If there are Muslims, there are problems. We gotta put these fuckers out of our misery.

The world has become too PC to effectively deal with assholes like this. However, if they keep it up, there's going to be a big backlash. The Thai military needs to roll in there like gangbusters, raze their villages, and force them the fuck out of their country and into Malaysia. Kill anyone regardless of sex or age that resists. That'd actually be doing them a favor since they want to live in a Muslim country anyway. Fuckers.
