Do any lifers ever wear Kimono or Yukata?

I havent, since I am a bit to tall and cant get a good one to fit. I have looked at sumo ones but i am not fat enough. Plus cant get shoes anyway.

No way man, I couldn't imagine the hazing I'd get if I went out in a yukata or kimono. (small town)

The farthest I'll go is wearing geta with my dogi in the summer to & from practice.

Hell yeah, I wear a yukata, but only on fireworks festival days. I think it'd be pretty badass to do hatsumode in a kimono, but:

1. Kimono for men are pretty expensive (like those for women aren't)...
2. Geta are hard to walk in (if it snows doubly so).
3. It's just a bit too dorkie-nipponophile even for me...

umm.. did it ever occur to you to have a tailor make one for you, to size? A yukata is such a simple garment, it's cut from one piece of cloth, any dang fool tailor could whip one together in 20 minutes. If you want a proper men's kimono, the whole haori and hakama bit, you'll have to go to a tailor anyway.

I bought a yukata from a nice hakujin tailor lady in Yaohan Plaza in San Francisco, I just bought an off-the-rack extra long gaijin cut yukata and it's still too short. If you want to get one custom made, be sure it's long enough or you'll get lots of

My lead carpenter back in Colorado wears the full Japanese construction worker kit (funny purple floppy trousers, split-toe shoes, head-rag) that used be to mine. I sometimes wear a jimbei (imagine a lightweight judo suit made of indigo-dyed cotton) on the farm or around the house.

I own 2 jinbei, one yukata, and one kimono:

a) yukata: worn once (at a fireworks festival);
b) kimono: worn once for Halloween;
c) jinbei: never worn.

You can get them really cheaply off the rack or even used, but djgizmoe is right--it feels a little too dorky to wear them. They sit in my closet as souvenirs.

I've only worn Japanese-style clothing in public once, and that was at my wedding. Once in a lifetime is enough for me. :wink:

I have a yukata that was given to me, but I have never worn it because it would make me feel like a dork. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Hey Taro, where'd you get this picture? I think the guy in it is my friend Ben (probably still toiling away in Nagoya...).

I wore a yukata while staying in Japan not so long ago (oh how I miss it...) and damn, they were comfortable!

Didn't leave a whole lot to the imagination though...

Tonight was my first kyudo practice weariing wafuku, before this I've only worn a hakima and dogi. Anway, walking into the dojo in my kimono, one of my friends about drops her bow laughing, saying something about the hen na gaijin...Yeah, and the only thing I could think of to come back with was to ask if it took seeing me in a kimono to figure that out. :hehe:

Needless to say, I can tell you who's off my shogatsu card list...
