Would this be the same press corps that sat on their collective asses during the initial two days of the incident? [The American press] devoted almost equal time to the death of an NFL player.

That is unbalanced but I just want to say that Reggie Smith's death at 43 was a big shock. It's one of those things that can't be compared to a mass tragedy but on the other hand it shouldn't be. Reggie Smith was a good man and his death was really sad. I see the point you're making but it's just the nature of the beast. When a famous person dies a sudden death it gets a lot of coverage.

You mean Reggie White, right? Reggie Smith is still coaching as far as I know.

I think that's been the main criticism over the coverage and support for the tsunami victims.

The New York Daily News is at it again...
"I think the people are good, but I don't know why they stay here now when we are so sad," a waiter at the Novotel said, asking that his name not be reported out of fear of losing his job.

Tsunami Tragedy. links to prove Japanese media a JOKE.

Postby blackcat » Sat Jan 01, 2005 1:28 am

120,000 dead and rising...tens of thousands missing...5 million homeless...

a natural disaster of UNREAL proportions.
A tragedy that makes even the biggest of earthquakes look mild.

So 5 days on do the japanese care? well yes..to a point..but the J medias self centered obsession was evident from day one.

Japanese deatholls were nearly always reported FIRST...even when figures and info was vague.

The Jmedia (J for JOKE) save all the tragic tear jerking stories for Hitomi Soga and Nigata.....month after month of saturation coverage...so they prove they can do it!

here is PROOF for the denialists and sceptics.

read these links and see what the world thinks:

http://www.afp.com/english/home/
http://www.boston.com/
http://www.reuters.com/
http://www.cnn.com/

hthttp://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/home/index.html
http://www.francedaily.com/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so you can see most of the world feel its still the top story or near the top...with little focus of national losses.

Now here are the self centered japanese in their own little world.

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/main/main-e.htm(classic..see below)
http://www.japantoday.com/
http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/(not too bad)

Well done Nippon you really have shown how little you care about anyone but yourselves.

what more would we expect from a facist toilet roll named the yomiuri...
"tsunami could hit japan in 100-200 years" and "gov. gives a survival leaflet of how to survive a ballistic missile attack"
and this "Japanese death toll at 14 The Yomiuri Shimbun"
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/newse/20041231wo21.htm

well I rest my case. the japanese media are disgrace.

Happy New Year all.....but sadly wont be for many.

BTW:and cudos to you AMERICA a grand total of 40 million dollars!!!
WOOOW the same cost of 5 hours in IRAQ.

Most countries care about their nationals

Postby killjoy » Sat Jan 01, 2005 2:27 am

the Japanese media looks at what its customers are interested in and prints that., like any business, including tabloids and news shows in the west.

On CNN, they went with celebrities (Interior designers, supermodels, sports figures) and Sweden is mourning lots of their citizens killed.

"All news is local" is a cliche but still is pretty true anywhere you go so singling out Japan's media is not a slam dunk I think.

I wouldn't read a Japanese newspaper for the international coverage, or even balanced coverage of some issues affecting FG but they know their public, and try to give them what they want.

Generally, local US papers don't even cover international stories, and when they do, they just grab the sensational stories off the AP or reprint from the NY Times or Washington Post.
Ever have to read the Cleveland Plain Dealer? Aargh! You'd think Ohio was the entire known world. Even the Philly Inquirer (a major city paper) barely covers international events.
The exception is for major disasters and wars started by the US.

Which isn't to say the Japanese press isn't good, because it isn't.

Looks like the U.S. just boosted their quota. I think that's pretty nice of them. I wonder how much CANADA donated? Canada never helps.

Ramchop, you didn't read the article I posted!

United Nations officials said that the international community had pledged a combined half-a-billion dollars in support, and that figure jumped to more than $800 million Friday when the United States increased its pledge.

The US boosted to $350 million.
