I've been careful. I've washed my hands a million times a day. Stayed away from the hacking little beasts... everything I could think of. But on Friday the 4th, I came home hacking. So I decided I'd relax, and take it easy and it'd go away the next day..

It didn't and I have been sick, hacking, headaches and so on for nearly 10 days. Finally yesterday I decided this is not a normal illness so I go down to the local J-clinic for a checkup and it is decided that I'll be taking some anti-biotics, along with some other drugs..

While I was in the clinic they hooked me up to a breathing tube machine that pumped out steamy medicine to clear my breathing. That worked for a while but I still have a slight hack. It's like I can't get the phlegm out with one good cough.

I'm calling in J-mutantitis... cause the doctor never gave me a word of explanation about what it is I have... he just said it sounded like asthma... wtf does that mean?

Anyway, I finally decided to take off of work today. this whole time I've been going in like a trooper on D-day. Well, this trooper is taking a furlough. At least one day, though it had to be with "nenkyu"...

Yea I was the same. Though now I don't cop it so often, I think the body needs time to adjust to the J-strains.
Used gets the runs more often than back home too but now I eat yoghurt everyday which seems to do the trick.

It is nasty isn't it! I have been down for 8 days now. Stomach, lower GI to start with, then moved to body and head with low fever every day. Evil J-Mutantitis...sucking the life force out of me!

Thought it was influenza, but doc told me yesterday it is secondary sinus infection from cold or whatever is going around.

I rather be super sick for 2-3 days then to have this thing linger for weeks.

Trying kampo (chinese herbs) to see if it will help.

LS, sounds like we got the same thing. The doc said I also had an upper-tract infection (whatever the hell that is). I feel slightly better, well enough to work, but still nauseous. It's seems to be taking ages to go away. I usually recover from flu or what ever after 4 or 5 days.

Sounds like bronchitis, that's usually what the inhaler machines are for. I get bronchitis usually every couple of years during the winter, antibiotics are pretty effective. Hope you feel better soon.

BB, I had the exact same thing a couple of months ago and had it diagnosed in the States as akin to asthma. They also gave me that steamy medicine and had me breathe into a machine. I was given Advair, a medicine that clears lung obstructions and is delivered via inhaler. They also put me on a 3-day hardcore antibiotic. It took a month, but that stuff knocked out whatever the problem was. I've been breathing normally for a couple of months now. Check to see if your J-doctor can prescribe Advair.

I'm completely cured now, but I think my breathing problems and coughing were attributable to the smoky air I was breathing day and night in Tokyo.

Well my hacking is slowing thanks to the antibiotics... but it's still there.

Plus I get my health check report back today, and it says my white blood cells are too high (norm is 3.5-9.0 X10*9/L) mine is 10.1 X10*9/L....

The I go checking on the web and find that norm is actually higher than the J-average (4.5-10.8 X10*9/L)

So I am confused...

and what is more I got an Xray and it says, I have an enlarged cardiac shadow??? Wtf...

I am thinking all of this is related to the stress over my mother's death, because last july everything was tip top.... I took this test about 1 month after my mom's death and got the result back today.

and I am still slightly hacking... Damn J-mutantitis just won't die.

If it doesn't end by tomorrow I am going back and asking about Advair. Thanks for the suggestions kamome.

It's amazing how much stress can affect you physically. The white blood cell count is usually connected with infection, according to my doctor (same experience last Dec)

I sympathize BB. It just sucks my energy and fucks with my stomache and head. I started antibiotics but seems to be improving at a glacial pace. And ya, I know for me the stress is not helping it. Bad stress!

You live in the boonies... out here in Yokohama we still have to go to the pharmacy.

Next time don't wait so long to go the doctor. AK and I can say from experience that pneumonia isn't fun, and your symptoms sound a lot like pneumonia (from someone who has absolutely no medical training).

Did they take a blood sample? When they took mine they measured for blood poisoning (sepsis), which corellated with the shadow they found on the chest x-ray.

Good luck... respiratory infections are a real drag.

No blood sample taken but they made me give a urine sample. They were checking for glucose or blood in my urine. None found.

It really blows being sick... I have far too many things to do to have to deal with this shit... being sick in Japan is a major crack in the old nutsack. Lucky for me I have a wife who takes care of me I won't wait the next time I get sick.

But what really fucked me good was the night before I became sick, I went to a yakitori joint and we were all talking about tori-influenza.. and then I developed what at first felt like the flu... quite comical. I even passed on the chicken sashimi because of bird flu...

I think you're confusing BSE with bird flu... AFAIK you don't get catch it that way...
