Maps, Documents Describe Tokto as Korea's Territory
The Korea Times
U.S. documents and a newly discovered Japanese map indicate that Korea's easternmost islets of Tokto were recognized as part of Korea at least from the 18th century.

Professor Kim Moon-gil of Pusan University of Foreign Studies on Sunday revealed a 220-year-old map of the Korean Peninsula produced by Japanese geographer Shihei Hayashi in 1785.

The map described Ullungdo and Tokto as one large island and marked the sea around Ullungdo as the ``East Sea,'' not the ``Sea of Japan.''

Other documents disclosed by Mokpo National University's Professor Jung Byung-joon indicate that before the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty in 1951, the U.S. State Department considered Tokto Korean territory....the rest...

News Link (Has A Couple Pop Ups)

In a press conference in Seoul, Japan's Ambassador Toshiyuki Takano said that Dokdo islets "historically and legally" belong to Japan.

The uninhabited South Korean-held island, lying between the Korean peninsula and Japan's largest main island of Honshu, is called Takeshima in Japanese and Dokdo in Korean.

Takano's remark came just after a group of assembly members in Japan's Shimane Prefecture submitted a bill to set up a prefectural ordinance to establish "Takeshima Day" to raise public awareness in Japan of the island.

The moves sparked strong protests in South Korea. Angry protesters gathered in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul, shouting anti-Japanese slogans.

Thousands of citizens staged torchlight parades in major cities. Protestors demanded Seoul to deport Japan's envoy over what they said was Japan's intention to invade and take away South Korean territories.

Having Takeshima Day is a Shimane government way of distracting attention from dubious public works projects which the prefecture is infamous for.
