Actualy I could count on my hands how few black people I saw in my life before I moved. Racial issues never came up and there were no real generalisations. No real institutionalized racism except from what I learned from American TV. So I had a clean slate to forum my own generalizations. Black people are not doing themselves any favours on how they are trying to make me feel bad for nothing my ancestors ever did.

So, what's your point? Racism doesn't mean hatered of blacks. Maybe there is another group the people of your country hate..

That is classified as nationalism and sectarianism. Not racism.

Reading this thread has inspired me to buy a copy and see how the
book is different from my memory of it.

How closed minded can you be?

Postby CC1 » Sat Mar 05, 2005 10:57 pm

I read this book as a child, and recently read it to my kids (about a month ago)...it is a great kids story! If you view it as racism, then you are seriously twisted!

kotatsuneko wrote:the thing is, japan as a whole only seems to suffer from financial discrimination (or finanacially related as in the american car wars, australian property disputes etc) when japanese are abroad a lot of the discrimination against them happens by racists mistaking them for chinese.

one aspect of race relations that pisses me off, is that in europe at least, only whites are targetted as racists.

racism against whites by blacks, asians, chinese, japanese, arabs, is never discussed. period. also inter "minority group" racism/ organised crime problems such as asian vs chinese, african vs jamaican related crime and bigotry is also never brought up.

personally, i have been attacked on more than one occasion just for being with my wife in london, and on one occasion in middle england was attacked by a group ofl racists , the police, fucking chav cops did nothing.

in the uk, it seems that pretty much everyone , well 8/10 are prejudiced no matter what their race/creed.

despite problems like stereotypes still being portrayed in books such as this, thanks to third rate entertainers like sapp and the blokes from thanes show etc, there are at least more human black images in the japanese media.

i cant wait to get back to japan, as japanese racism i can deal with, most of the people i encountered were very nice and unlike in london 99% of the people seemd decent.

sorry for the mixed up post, but what i`m trying to say is that the ignorance in publishing such a book, compared to the ignorance making up the absolute scum of 99% of the population in england is trivial.

imho

What you really mean to say is , 99.9 % of the people in Japan seemed like decent plastic people. Is it not?

So you're saying that racism is only hatered of blacks? What dictionary did you look that up in? Racism is racial prejudice. It has nothing to do with being black. So before you start telling me what words mean, you need to make sure you know what the hell you're talking about.

Not just blacks, but asian, middle east... You know somebody of a different race. Americans use words in such a bastardised way they lose meaning. Sectarianism is a similar sort of hate and just as bad, but dont confuse it.

I'm not the one who's confused. I never mentioned anything about nationalism or sectarianism so I don't know why you keep trying to explain the difference to me. I know the difference, jackass. I find it annoying when people mix the terms up too. And that's not just an American thing. I've heard my English friend do the same thing. Anyway, you're obviosly a prejudiced piece of shit so you aren't any better than a racist.

Calling a black guy "Sambo" is equilivant to calling an Irish man "Paddy".

Black people that find it offensive really need to get over themselves.

Sambo

Postby Mennon » Thu Jun 16, 2005 2:41 pm

I loved that book when I was a kid, when those tigers ran around the tree and turned into butter, enough to feed his family. Great stuff.
I love it when white westerners get upset about rasicm on behalf of the "lesser" races who apparently can't defend themselves because of...ah... white western racism. One interesting thing about living in Japan is seeing how I react to rasicm when it is directed at myself. I really try to blow it off, or else I brood about it for days and write bitchy snide remarks on websites. Not a nice way to live.
Hey, shit happens, just blow it off! Whoooo!
BTW For those Aussies old enough, do you remember Sambo chips?

Comme Ca stores are selling these products (books, softtoys etc) in the "zakka" dept and playing this song non-stop for the whole day. I almost fainted listening to this song for 2 hours and thought it was that Perfume group's song, until Capt Japan posted above. (I was letting my son taking part in the Comme Ca Store "working experience for kids" programme in one of their stores, that is why I stayed that long).
