Russia Declares War (1945)

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Mar 28, 2005 1:35 am

I keep stumbling across Japan ephemera these days. Here's another one:

Image
I.S. Wright - coins, banknotes, militaria
PROPAGANDA LEAFLET small type 85 x 110mm It is officially announced from Moscow that Russia is in a state of war with Japan from August 9 1945. This news coincides with the announcement by British & America of Warfare by Atomic Bomb on Japan.

So this is one of the leaflets that the Americans dropped. I have read about them in 'The Fall of Japan' by William Craig.

While the coup foundered at the War Ministry, the peace faction was galvinized into action. Koichi Kido was the catalyst. For several days, the B-29's had waged a campaign of enlightenment as well as destruction over Japan. Millions upon millions of leaflets fell from the bomb bays as the Twentieth Air Force attempted to inform civilians that the war was hopeless.... At 7:00 A.M., a servant brought Kido a slip of paper that had fallen into his garden. It was an Allied leaflet and it told the whole story. Kido was appalled.... he knew that decisive action must be taken that day (August 14th) before the troops put two and two together.
