Honesty is One Policy

Cash isn't just turning up in Japan, it seems:
KSL NewsRadio: Man Finds $10K in New House
An Orem man is being praised for his honesty after finding thousands of dollars in his house and then searching out who it belongs to. Katsu Hibino recently moved to the U.S. from Japan. When he tried to find the cable to hook up the T.V. in his new home, he found a box in a vent instead that had 10-thousand dollars inside. Hibino took the money to the Orem Police Department. They discovered the money belongs to a former owner of the house who is widowed and now living in an assisted living center. Hibino says he was more than happy to give all the money back.

Orem Man Finds $10K in New House
Image
It's not uncommon to buy a house and when you move in, find the previous owners left something behind. Usually it's not worth much. But an Orem man is in shock from what he found.
Hibino Katsumasa works for International Bridge, a computer company in Orem. He's been in America for about two years since moving here from Japan.
A year ago he bought a house and last week decided to have Cable TV installed. When he and a friend pulled the cover off of an air vent during the installation, he found a metal box. As he opened it up, he saw something was wrapped up in aluminum foil. When he unwrapped the foil, he saw cash. "Twenties, fifties, one hundreds, everything. Exactly ten thousand." ...More...

I'd be like: (sing it with me now)

We're going Sizzler...we're going Sizzler!

:D

I think it was very honourable. He did the right thing. I dun't know if I would have. Probably but not 100%... depending on how hard up for money I would have been at the time.

I couldn't live with the fact that it is someone else money. :?

Stories like this seem to come up all the time in Japan (I seem remember a story a few years ago coming out of Kagawa where some one found a hugh amount of money left there by the previous owner.) Why and how people leave large quantities of money in their floorboards is the thing I want to know.

My truly biased feeling is that if it had been a US citizen, odds are they would have happily kept the $. Japanese seem less likely to take something that does not belong to them. I have forgotten something valuable in a public place so many times in Japan and yet still found it where I left it hours later.

Just don't do what a guy I used to know did...

He stumbled out of a bar blind drunk and hopped on the first bike he came across... Rode it home and ditched it somewhere near the gaijin house.

The next day when he saw the bike.....he realized he'd stolen the bike of a cop!

One exhausting summer day last year; I left my brand spanking new Y140,000 camcorder in a KFC in Ikebukero for 1 hour and it was still there sitting atop the table when i returned! :D

If it had been Roppongi .....
