Ive been waiting for an excuse to get a powerbook.

Im thinking a 12" with some extra memory banged into it.

In Ireland I'd have to pay €1425 ($1,840) with an Educational discount
or €1499 ($1937) without!

so for $1499 in the US - I can easily afford a return plane ticket to JFK and back with the difference and do some sightseeing and shopping while im there :D (id save nearly as much buying in Japan but the plane ticket would cost WAY more)

A couple of days after Apples launch of Tiger (May 1st), the EU, Canada (and possibily Japan too) will be imposing sanctions on the US because of something called the Byrd Amendment (giving US companies an uncompetitive edge)...
Making my beloved Powerbook cost even more

This is exactly what I've been waiting for too. Now the only other announcement I need is whether or not they'll be offering the 10% off all hardware on OSX launch day like they did with Panther. :)

I am slightly bummed about Tiger, it lists my old B&W G3/400 U2W as compatible, but Tiger ships on DVD and very few B&W G3s have DVD drives, I only have a CD drive (not even a CDR). Back in those ancient days, a G3/400 wasn't fast enough to do full motion DVD video, it required a video daughtercard, so it was a rather expensive option.
But I can send my Tiger DVD back to Apple and they'll send me a set of CDs with Tiger installers via snail mail. Oh boy I bet that's going to be delivered speedily. I think I might be able to put the DVD installer in my main CPU, then attach it to the G3 via FireWire Target Disk Mode, it should be bootable as an attached volume.
Or maybe I don't really need to upgrade, since the old G3 is just a server and doesn't need all the fancy latest gizmos. Oh hell, who am I kidding, I always upgrade the instant anything is available.

Nice rig! Too small for my needs, but if you are not needing a lot of screen real estate and like portability, you're gonna love it. I'd load up on RAM. My TiBook has been upgraded to 1GB RAM and a 100GB HD. I'm good to go for another coupla years and will buy a tower next instead.

Sheeet, I ain't bought a tower in ages. I have Charles' twin bro computer for my tower right now.

Charley, I'll load up my G3 with Tiger CDs and will let you know how it goes...(uh...after the release date).

Spotlight is reaaaaly cool.

Hmmmm...buy now or wait? There may be a discount on launch day, but the Ginza store will most likely be packed to the rafters with Mac Faithful(TM). The Up-To-Date price for Japan is 1,980, but it's a mail-in deal. After having to have Taro hassle for my iLife '04 upgrade, I think I'm probably better off waiting than muddling through the process to get the Tiger disc.

Of course, the real question is - where's the best place in Tokyo to buy Mac ram? It sure isn't Apple! :)

It doesn't matter, I wouldn't watch DVDs on the old G3, I have a new(ish) dual 1ghz G4 MDD machine for that. The old G3 is a server, I wasn't really planning on investing any money on DVD upgrades for the old beast. Looks like I won't need a DVD drive to install Tiger anyway. But thanks for the offer.

I went by the Ginza Apple store today to see if they had anything to say about the possibility of a "10% off on hardware/systems during the launch event" like there was when Panther came out. All the guy would say was he didn't know of anything like that, but that there might be.

Uh-huh.

Seeing how the launch event is from 6pm to midnight, I expect I'll get there a little early just in case people treat it like opening day.

Then again, with the 29th being the kick-off of Golden Week, shouldn't most people have left Tokyo by 6pm?

Caustic, sorry about that mate. But generally folks at apple are not to reveal, confirm, nor deny things of speculation or promotionals that have yet to be stated. You just have to wait and see how the cookie crumbles. However, I should say that it will be a fun day on friday.

Yeah, I know. but seeing how the last two OS lauch events had 10% off hardware specials, it's rather likely this one will too. But there wasn't an Apple store open in Japan for either the Jaguar or Panther launches, so who can say for sure.

It'd be lame if they cheaped out on the deal just for Japan though.

Updated Apple Power Mac G5 systems en route to Company Stores
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1024
The models spotted were dual 2GHz, 2.3GHz, and 2.7GHz. All three versions reportedly sport new dual-layer DVD burners. The dual 2GHz configuration reportedly includes 512 ram, a 160 hard disk, and a 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card.

Reports also suggest the company may be in the process of updating the majority of its CPU offerings to include Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger as the default operating system.

ThinkSecret also had some very interesting stuff up two weeks ago, and another story from last week:

http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0504macs.html

http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0504g5notes.html

At first they mentioned that the new PowerMacs might have dual core chips, but in the second story they say it seems that single core chips will still be used.

In any case there is some very impressive hardware on the way!

Looks like ThinkSecret's dual 2.7GHz info was correct -- the specs were leaked via Amazon yesterday:

Won't this new price point pretty much kill sales of the 23" Cinema Display? You only get about 31% more screen area than the 20" but at a cost increas of nearly 88%.

As I said before, I cannot speculate on things coming from Apple, as well I work for them :D

Though, if those of you have a chance come on down to the apple store! Friday should prove to be an eventful day. [shameless sales pitch] for those of you in the Nagoya area, if you need some help with apple products or information in English, I maybe be able to offer some help so come on down![/shameless sales pitch]

No company ever lets customers know in advance of specials - that is just stupid business as it will kill the sales in the days preceeding. Plus it spoils the surprise.

I just popped into the Ginza store (didn't bother lining up yet as there are only 3 people in line - and the storefront's getting too much sun for my tastes right now) and they've got Tiger installed on all the demo machines. Played a bit but didn't dig too deep. Want to take it for a spin on my new PB instead.

Only 7.5 more hours to go! :D

Today is the day! We get a free copy of Tiger plus a SWAGGY "Spotlight" flashlight. Wonder how much I can get for it on Ebay....That iPod t-shirt went for $50 bucks!

I don't know if you should wear that Spotlight shirt in public. Some people are furious at Spotlight, like ME. It took 2 days to index my hard drive, even though I'm using a striped RAID on my dual 1Ghz G4. Now every time I type in a search string, after the first 3 characters, I get the spinning beach ball cursor, and I have to wait and wait and wait to finish typing my search string. Sometimes I have to wait several minutes while the CPU is churning, doing a search for something I haven't finished specifying yet. Spotlight apparently only works instantly when you have just a few files to search, not 500Gb of files accumulated over a decade. I have yet to get Spotlight to return results in less than 3 minutes. I thought this might just be some problem with my configuration, but apparently it isn't, other people are reporting this same aggravating behavior. I want the old Find command in the Finder back!

It's not a shirt, it's a flashlight!

Sorry you are having trouble. I really like Spotlight, though I don't have 500GB of files to sort. I had no idea it takes so long to index files.

BTW, you're not running that on the G3, or are you? I'd like to know, 'cause I have 148 GBs attached to my G3 and was wondering what the performance is like....

Regardless of love or hate, I bet I could get $50 for the Spotlight Flashlight.

The flashlight's not too big a deal, but I guess they couldn't really do dogtags again.

It would've been sweet had the flashlight been one of those insanely powerful LED ones. Now that would've been worthy of the "Spotlight" moniker. :)

I've got the whole timeline of my day blogged and up on my site, complete with photos. It was cool, but I got there waaaaayyyy too early. I guess Mac geeks aren't as hardcore about lining up early the way gamers are.
