Man held after girl files false complaint

Saitama prefectural police officers wrongfully arrested a man on suspicion of robbery after acting on a false offense report submitted by a girl Thursday, apparently after the girl was asked to make the report by an 18-year-old man who had robbed the man, it has been learned...At about dawn, police officers from the Tokorozawa Police Station found a man who appeared to fit the description given by the girl near the location where she said she had been robbed.

I don't know if this is a new scam or if the perpetrators were just opportunistic. There actions seem slightly dense. Why even report a false robbery? If the guy was drunk or (more likely) on the brink of passing out he probably wouldn't remember a damn thing anyways and if he can't account for the lost money it was likely spent on hookers or hostesses.

It was a screw up all round. The Mainichi said this:

At around 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, the boy rammed his bicycle into the man who was on his way home on a municipal road in Tokorozawa, and stole a wallet containing about 80,000 yen in cash from him, according to investigators. The man suffered injuries that are expected to take two weeks to heal.

The boy fled the scene but later realized he lost the girl's purse from the basket of his bicycle.

The girl, who was hiding near the robbery scene, feared that the incident might come to light because her lost purse contained her cash card, so she visited a police box and filed a false report accusing the man of stealing her purse.

Two officers who rushed to the scene found a man that matched the girl's description, and interrogated him.

At around 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, officers took the man into custody after he gave them the purse and told them he picked it up near the scene. The girl then identified him as the robber.

However, after he categorically denied the allegations during questioning, officers questioned the girl, who then admitted that she trumped up the accusations against the man.
