1 in 4 Japanese women believe they are uglier than others

One in four Japanese women believe they don't look as good as other women, according to a survey by lifestyle product maker Unilever.

And only 14 percent of Japanese women were satisfied with their looks, more than 20 percentage points lower than the overall average in a survey of women from 10 countries.

Japanese women overall had an extremely low value of their own looks and personalities.

Overall, 37 percent of women from the 10 countries that took part in the survey were satisfied with their own external appearance, but just 14 percent of Japanese women were happy with the way they look.

No Japanese women were prepared to describe themselves as "cute" or "beautiful" and only 2 percent of Japanese respondents felt they were "charming."

Hiroto Murasawa, deputy chairman of the Japanese Academy of Facial Studies, urged Japanese women to feel better about themselves.

"Japanese women are at a level where they should be confident about their fashion sense, make-up and make-up techniques," Murasawa said. "Yet, for some reason they put themselves down."

More than half the respondents from Brazil and Argentina were satisfied with their looks and beauty. More than 40 percent of women in the United States, Canada and Italy felt the same about themselves.

In Italy, 17 percent of women considered themselves cute, while in Britain, 20 percent felt they were charming.

Unilever conducted the survey among 3,200 women from 10 countries during February and March last year. From Japan, 300 women aged from 18 to 64 took part. The other countries involved in the survey were the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, France, Britain, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal. I'm a certified tennis teacher and I remember reading a similar survey done around the world with people rating their own tennis skills. While many of the Japanese in the survey had played for decades they rated themselves quite poorly. Without correcting for cultural biases this sort of question seems useless, be it tennis skill or beauty.

There is a lot people can do. They can control their diet and exercise so as not to get fat (except for that small percentage of people for whom this is truely impossible). They can get cosmetic surgery to correct/improve the unattractive body parts they were born with. They can go to a dentist. And so on. Yes, some people are lucky enough to be born without the need for these things. But just as dumb kids have to study more than smart kids, ugly people shouldn`t get to use the "i wasn`t lucky at birth like you" excuse - they just need to work harder at looking good.

My own observations suggest that a society's ideas of beauty and ugliness tend to create abnormal personalities at both ends of the spectrum and that it is those lucky enough to be considered plain that stand the best/easiest chance of being a balanced soul.

Most people are fat simply because they are lazy and eat unhealthy amounts of fatty foods - note that only western over-consuming nations have problems with weight. Hey, I`m saying people should be obsessed with their looks - just saying that if someone wants to conform to the beauty standards of their culture, they can do so. Being born "ugly" is no longer and excuse. And being born wth genes that make it harder for you to stay slim is no excuse either: just spend that extra hour in the gym. After all, it`s a health issue as much as an aesthetic one.

As for judging people by looks, sure, it`s not the be-all-and-end-all, but it can be a decent way to judge someone, depending on what you are judging them for. For a sexual partner, obviously this has always been a major criteria. For an employee, it may also be a useful criteria: After all, if they can`t even put in enough effort to keep themselves in shape, groomed, and clean, how much effort do you think they`ll put in to the job? If they don`t vaguely keep up with modern fashion trends, you probably don`t want them working for you if your field is marketing or advertising or anything popculture related. If they show no understanding of color coordination in their clothing and cosmetics, I don`t want them doing graphic design for me either.

As long as a person shows they care about their health and appearance, that`s enough for me. I don`t care if their ears are different sizes or their breasts too small or too big or they are balding (hair replacement is ridiculous). Just stay in shape and make an attempt at looking your best.
