In Japan, Women's Constitutional Rights in Peril

Japan's ruling party is pursuing drastic revisions to the country's constitution, including rewording the guarantee of gender equality. Women's rights advocates say that if the revisions pass, Japan will return to "a dark period of history."

The constitution, written in 1946 after World War II, helped reshape life for women here. One of its major changes was to ensure that marriage would be solely based on agreement of husband and wife, who had equal rights. Before then women were not guaranteed civil rights or legal rights. They were not allowed to vote or own property. Although husbands could file for divorce, wives could not.

Then, in June of last year, a constitutional revision panel of the ruling party proposed adding language to Article 24 of the constitution that would emphasize the values of family and community.

"It is shameful that Japanese people no longer think much of family, community and the nation, and that some of them even insist on having a system of retaining separate family names," Masahiro Morioka, a ruling party member in the House of Representatives said in the report. "The constitution must ensure that protecting family is the foundation of securing the nation."

I said this was going to happen. Changing Article 9 was a just an excuse for these old throwbacks to get out the safety scissors, crayons, and construction paper.

Expect Meiji Constitution Reloaded if it passes the Diet. :roll:

Enough of these posts already. I'm tired of seeing every other post here turn into some diatribe against Bush. Don't like the guy and hold US citizenship? Fine, vote for someone else the next go round. Don't like the guy and don't hold US citizenship? Fine, immigrate to the States and naturalize; in a short time you'll be able to vote. Otherwise, you're SOL. Then again, foreigners usually are whenever they are 'foreign', hence the a propos title Fucked Gaijin.

But enough of the bitching, at least around here. There are plenty of sites on US politics better suited to such tirades and swipes.

What happened to freedom? Or would you be happier if the US moved even further away from being free and it became increasingly difficult to speak out against the government? The last time I checked "silencing critics" was not one of the tenets of a free nation.

Bringing the discussion back on topic, Bush isn't the reason the LDP wants to rollback women's rights... they've wanted to do that ever since the constitution was put in place. :idea:

I agree that the two are not at all related. They are just happening at the same time, and both situations suck.

FG isn't simply an Internet message board, it's a board principally about Japan and things Japanese, hence the name Fucked Gaijin and not Why Bush is a Wanker. But I'll be your huckleberry. As I'm sure you're aware, this message board, like many others, is not 'free' - at least not in the sense of a 'free-for-all' because you and I cannot post whatever we want. Hence bans on 'warez or otherwise illegal links,' 'prohibited topics,' and 'posting guidelines.'

Second, this is a message board, not a country - while Ultra does have some interesting knickknacks for sale, as far as I know he's not printing his own currency or creating his own armed forces.

Third, this forum - F*cked News deals with 'Odd news from Japan and all things Japanese around the world' so I assume 'speak[ing] out against the government' would refer to the Japanese government. Speaking out against other governments may be ethically defensible but falls outside the scope of this thread and this forum. Why not vent your political frustrations in Beyond F*cked where they belong?

Back on topic...

1. Japanese women of the current era would leave in droves for FG beds unless they suspend their international travel rights.

2. The problem isn't really the family. It's the system, the machine. Japanese husbands are too busy and tired from working to come home and fuck.

3. Then you have the problem that after kids are born, the Japanese have this weird thing that wife changes to mother and is therefore unfuckable.

WTF!! Education can fix that. They are taking a chainsaw to a problem that a scalpel would fix.
