MDN: Bark stripped off ancient tree at World Heritage site
Bark has been stripped off an ancient cedar tree at a protected World Heritage site here, officials said. The tree on Yaku Island off Kagoshima Prefecture was registered as a World Heritage site in December 1993, and the local forestry office set up a rope around the tree to restrict access..."Many people want to protect the tree. I cannot believe someone has damaged it," said curator Kaoru Matsumoto...The cedar tree, 25.3 meters high, is located in the central part of Yaku Island and is believed to be 2,170 to 7,200 years old.

There was a big flap over a similar situation in Washington D.C. a few years ago.

Right at the height of the spring cherry blossom festival, someone attacked several trees and cut down a couple of the smaller saplings. It looked like someone attacked the base of the trees with an axe, but in most cases, fled before completing the job.

Accusations flew that this was a racist attack against this prominent monument to Japanese-American relations. The National Park Service set up extensive round-the-clock video surveillance and put extra manpower on the job, to protect the cherry trees and apprehend the culprit. And finally they caught the criminal in the act.

It was a beaver.

It was a beaver.

Now why would a beaver want to damage Japanese-American relations. :?

Drawn and quartered I believe.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
