MDN: Bark stripped off ancient tree at World Heritage site
Bark has been stripped off an ancient cedar tree at a protected World Heritage site here, officials said. The tree on Yaku Island off Kagoshima Prefecture was registered as a World Heritage site in December 1993, and the local forestry office set up a rope around the tree to restrict access..."Many people want to protect the tree. I cannot believe someone has damaged it," said curator Kaoru Matsumoto...The cedar tree, 25.3 meters high, is located in the central part of Yaku Island and is believed to be 2,170 to 7,200 years old.
