Smoking doesn't cause cancer in Japan

At least it doesn't according to Judge Toshinobu Akiyama not pictured above

From the Japan Times.

Presiding Judge Toshinobu Akiyama said Wednesday that he supports the Tokyo District Court's ruling in July 2004 that the court "cannot affirm the causal relationship between smoking and the diseases of the plaintiffs and the deceased plaintiffs."

In Wednesday's ruling, Akiyama noted that while smoking does endanger one's health, there are other substances in the environment that can lead to cancer.

Such factors must be considered comprehensively when referring to the dangers brought about by smoking, the judge said, adding that the effects of tobacco on the human body have not yet been thoroughly clarified.

Akiyama also ruled that compared to other addictive substances, including heroine, cocaine and alcohol, nicotine addiction is relatively we

This is not the first time Judge Akiyama has had a 'different opinion'. He also presided over the Shiori Ino case where he denied a casual link between police inaction and Ino's Murder.

Smoking does not cause cancer. The seeds of cancer are produced by excessive sexual indulgences or extreme selfishness. Smoking merely creates a point of weakness in the body where the seeds may germinate.
The law: Everything existing on the physical plane is an exteriorization of a thought, which must be balanced through the one who issued the thought. (Percival)

Second hand smoke is bad and I do sympathize with the victims of it however I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for those who sue tobacco companies because they got cancer from their smoking, however the fact that the learned judge is questioning the relationship between cigarettes and cancer which is accepted by everyone except tobacco lobbyists is telling.

He is not questioning a "relationship" between cigarettes and cancer per se (he is quoted in the article saying, "smoking does endanger one's health"), but questionging that there is a strong enough direct causal relationship that would allow a smoker who has cancer to prove that it was the tobacco that caused his particular cancer.

This sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
