....No, she's not intoxicated. The young lady's vestibular system, which controls her sense of movement and balance, has been thrown off-kilter by two weak electrical currents delivered just behind her ears. (Click here to see video of a remotely controlled woman).....
At the 2005 SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference in Los Angeles this week, NTT researchers debuted a device designed to exploit the effects of GVS. Known as "Shaking the World," the project is the result of research carried out by NTT researcher Taro Maeda....more....

I just found this about a gamer's perspective

UPDATE: Justin Maxwell writes:

I tried the GVS at SIGGRAPH's Emerging Technologies area on Monday. The researchers are hoping it will take off in gaming, but after only five minutes of use I had a strong metallic taste (like licking the contacts of a 9-volt battery -- one of the rituals of childhood) in my mouth, and had a very weird headache -- a pulsating blunt feeling in the middle of my head -- for about three hours afterwards. That's just after five minutes of use]

Japan developing remote control for humans

CNN.com - Associated Press, Tuesday, October 25, 2005 (19:58 GMT), ATSUGI, Japan:....
...Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., Japans top telephone company, says it is developing the technology to perhaps make video games more realistic.
A special headset was placed on my cranium by my hosts during a recent demonstration at an NTT research center. It sent a very low voltage electric current from the back of my ears through my head -- either from left to right or right to left, depending on which way the joystick on a remote-control was moved. The technology is called galvanic vestibular stimulation -- essentially, electricity messes with the delicate nerves inside the ear that help maintain balance.
I felt a mysterious, irresistible urge to start walking to the right whenever the researcher turned the switch to the right. I was convinced -- mistakenly -- that this was the only way to maintain my balance...more...

The ultimate remote control

Postby canman » Wed Oct 26, 2005 5:45 pm

This sounds a little scary having electric current sent through your head and then controlling your actions. I wonder if this is healthy, and who were the test models for this device?

Japanese mind control device

Postby xavven » Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:28 am

Just imagine being rendered the rough equivalent of a radio-controlled toy car.

Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., Japans top telephone company, says it is developing the technology to perhaps make video games more realistic. But more sinister applications also come to mind.

I can envision it being added to militaries' arsenals of so-called "non-lethal" weapons.

A special headset was placed on my cranium by my hosts during a recent demonstration at an NTT research center. It sent a very low voltage electric current from the back of my ears through my head _ either from left to right or right to left, depending on which way the joystick on a remote-control was moved.

 As they say.. from a military point of view...thats evil. Lets make the enemy run right into our mines! or better yet! onto a pre-assigned artillery spot! the possibilities are endless, and scary 8O

Nothing much to add, except "wow". Truly frightening, but I must admit, I'd like to give it a try.
