Loose lips sink ships...

Postby GomiGirl » Tue Jul 25, 2006 6:25 pm

Kinda related to Silly Girls Thread...

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Crew Start leaving listing ship via BBC 25 July 2006

The crew of a cargo vessel listing virtually "on its side" off the coast of Alaska have begun to abandon ship, Coast Guard officials have said.

The 654ft (196m) Singapore-flagged Cougar Ace is listing at an 80-degree angle. US Coast Guard helicopters have arrived to pick up the 22 crew.

The vessel is carrying 4,813 cars from Japan to Vancouver, Canada. more...

nah I checked on that - no cars on this one.. They have had a boat sink on them before though - not great for business as you can imagine.

I did hear that more ships go down than we hear about. Or if the seas get rough, a container or two is chucked over the side. I heard this from some people who work in expat relocations as at times, whole houseloads of furniture have gone overboard. Not all the time of course, but more often than you would imagine.

Also, another area here is that there are extremely large well greased back doors on a lot of transit warehouses and immediate access to roads leading directly into the blackmarket areas. Though not so much these days as before, a lot of low pay was genorously supplemented by back door sales of "lost overboard" or "lost in transit" shipments.

So far I've seen no mention of it in the Japanese English Dailies.

The thing doesn't exactly look like the most stable thing afloat. Perhaps it was a laker converted to work on the oceans.

Sorry. My fault again on this one.

It was a dark and stormy night, and the sea was angry, my friends. Anyway, I suggested we play some cricket in the "hold" (where we "hold" the cars), to pass the time and keep our minds off the storm and the mind-numbingly boring TV in that area. Of course, I like a long run-up when I bowl, so we moved all the cars over to the port side (the side we keep the port on) and, well, after about the 4th over, our fielders were starting to stand on the sides of the cars and we knew something was wrong and . . . you know the rest.

And I thought we'd get in trouble for smashing that 1 windscreen!

We're hoping to make it up to our boss.

We're thinking of marketing this load of Mazdas (Mazda3 and CX-7) as "a new range" of models.

Still thinking about names, but how about: the "Aquarium" for the Mazda3 and the "Pacific" for the CX-7.

We can replace the airbags with air filters.

A Crushing Issue:
How to Destroy
Brand-New Cars

---Mazda Forced to Design A 'Disassembly' Line After Odd Sea Disaster--
Wall Street Journal Online, April 29, 2008]
...Mazda...decided to destroy approximately $100 million worth of factory-new automobiles. "We couldn't run the risk of damaging the brand name that Mazda worked so hard over the years to develop," says Jeremy Barnes, the company's corporate-affairs director for North America.
It turns out that wrecking cars isn't a simple matter. "We had to create a disassembly line, basically," says Bob Turbett, the Mazda executive overseeing the destruction process.
It took more than a year to devise a plan that satisfied everyone. The city of Portland wanted assurance that nearly 5,000 cars' worth of antifreeze, brake fluid and other hazardous goop wasn't mishandled. Insurers covering Mazda's losses wanted to be sure the company wouldn't resell any cars or parts -- thereby profiting on the side. So every steel-alloy wheel has to be sliced, every battery rendered inoperable, and every tire damaged beyond repair. All CD players must get smashed...more....

What a waste! Some items would be safer to destroy but a little common sense could've saved a lot of reusable items - like tyres (!) and wheels, etc. I would've thought it would've been easy to draw up an agreement so that the insurer recouped any money by selling back to Mazda the reusable parts at a price just below manufacturing level and/or sold reusable goods/parts to third parties.
