ZARD Lead Singer Dies In Hospital Fall

Postby Mulboyne » Mon May 28, 2007 2:31 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Izumi Sakai, lead singer of hit J-Pop band ZARD died yesterday at the age of 40. Sakai had been admitted to hospital last year for an operation to treat cervical cancer but had to be readmitted after it was learned that the it had spread to her lungs. She fell down stairs at the Keio University Hospital early Saturday morning and died from a cerebral contusion on Sunday afternoon. Police are investigating the possibility that she committed suicide since there were traces indicating that she may have jumped from the handrail. Her agent has suggested that it may simply have been an accident since she hurt her leg the previous day and may just have been unsteady on the stairs. ZARD had a series of major hits in the nineties and were planning a new album for this autumn followed by their first tour in three years.

Here she is singing "Makenaide":

A bit of a bubble gum band so listening to the video somewhat tempered the sympathy I had to her plight, nonetheless provided an interesting contrast to Matsuoka's suicide.:(

This song reminds me of my junior high school days.
She had been famous race queen before getting to be singer.

Izumi Sakai gets my respect. She wasn't just a singer, she was a songwriter and kept out of the usual music industry spotlight. She was Zard in the same way that Debbie Harry was Blondie: some people still think the band name was her name.

If she did throw herself off a handrail down a three metre set of stairs then that sounds like a particularly bad way of committing suicide given that the chance of survival from that kind of fall seem pretty high.

Yup, and I stand by what I said in both cases.

When I wrote that I knew exactly that someone would throw the two contradictory comments at me. Believe me, you guys are sooooo predictable. I still think Dimwit's post was a very stupid thing to say.

I think I have to apologize... he got that line from me.

Me, I'm just a common-or-garden hypocrite. But I've got to hand it to you Jack, having ceased to perceive your own deceptions, your ability to lie with such sincerity is awesome.
