from the OBVIOUS-but-needs-to-be-said Department:
When looking for J-POP MP3s from Kazaa, Limewire and other P-2-P clients/programs, spyware is bad on the Japan side. Use spyware free programs like Kazaa Lite.

Likewise, the REAL Player and the Windows Media Player are full of nasty spyware. When I have to use those nasty programs to listen to news, etc, I use my spare "sacrifice" computer that is physically-separate from my home LAN (and I wipe/reformat it's hard disk every few months to kill the spyware).

Mo' OBVIOUS: Stay away from Windows apps and life gets easier.

Japanese trace music downloads
[PC Pro] 14:30 Thursday 30th January 2003

The Japanese recording industry has successfully tested a technology that enables music file to be watermarked and tracked....

The technology embed a digital watermark in the file, In tests the Japanese Society for the Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) set up dummy Web sites with 12 watermarked files. Using a piece of software called J-MUSE, JASRAC was able to track all the files for the two weeks of the programme.

spyware in general is evil on those apps mentioned, but I guess I was wondering if there were any such web-browser hijacking programs that are as notorious in Japan?

just curious what to avoid... :D
