Postby Taro Toporific » Fri Jan 03, 2003 2:46 am

Here's old question: "Should auld acquaintance be forgot/ And never brought to mind?"

Welsh hero's bid to commemorate PoWs in Taiwan --- icWales, UK
"Jack Edwards was held captive by the Japanese where he toiled in a copper mine with hundreds of other half-starved Allied detainees during World War II ... a war crimes investigator. In Japan, his book was released under the title Kutabare Jap Yaroh! (Drop Dead Jap!) ... "
Refer also to this article...

Should auld acquaintance be forgot/ And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot/ And auld lang syne?
4th verse. We two hae paidled i' the burn / Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd / Sin' auld lang syne.

I don't mean to split hairs, but the translation of the title could have been done a little better. The Japanese translation sounds really racist.

I seriously doubt that that issue would have crossed the minds of those POWs. Diversity at that time was not the long suit of either side!
