With and W/O insurance... roughly how much for braces for installation and maintenance?

EDIT: I don't have insurance here in the US, debating on whether or not to get the gear installed before I go or wait till I'm in Tokyo.... off-chance for UNIVERSITY FUNDED free installations... need to get on that.... also.... I couldn't find anything on whether or not it would be easy for the J-Dentists to to the routine checkups and what not if I get me installation in the states... anyone here a dentist?

I don't know about the costs in Japan, but it has to be higher in Japan given the exchange rate, doesn't it. I have had some of my employees get braces here in the US and then return to Japan. The orthodontist here (Seattle) was able to refer them to a practitioner in Japan.

I don't have national health but private insurance here and often I don't bother claiming for dental work as it really cheap. I just pay cash. But that is just for routine checks and cleaning. Don't know about braces or anything more serious than that. Husband said that he had a crown fitted here in Japan that was really cheap compared to the cost back home in Australia.

So to not answer your question... it really depends.

For all my dental work here... i have to think aboo keeping coins to pay for the dentist... crown was on the 3000 range if i remember well... but usual care last visits were 190, 200 and 250 yens, smile from the hot nurse inclooded...
(hot but not slutty, in a homely kind of way...)

General costs for dentists in Japan are low, but braces are not covered by National Health Insurance. Dentists can basically charge what they want. Some dentists are priced reasonably, others very expensive. Same applies for the periodical adjustments of braces.

If I were you I would get myself a brace in your own country, because it may take some time before you find yourself a dentist in Japan that is satisfactory price / quality-wise. And then there is of course also the language barrier. At the very least discuss it with your dentist at home and ask him whether he would be able to refer you to a dentist in Japan for regular check-ups.

As Russel already pointed out, braces (and other cosmetic dentistry) are NOT covered by national insurance. Also, look around at the average Japanese person's teeth and ask yourself if you really want to get dental work done here. There are some great dentists here but most are horrible and the good ones can be very expensive.

As Russel already pointed out, braces (and other cosmetic dentistry) are NOT covered by national insurance. Also, look around at the average Japanese person's teeth and ask yourself if you really want to get dental work done here. There are some great dentists here but most are horrible and the good ones can be very expensive.

And of course, like many other things in Japan, the horrible ones can also be very expensive. Price seems to be more a function of location, decor, and ad budget, wholly independent of competence or quality of service.

My gut reaction would be to avoid the places that seem to be 'gaijin clinics' (advertising in Metropolis, for example), but that's mainly because I nearly got killed by a pair of incompetent fuckwits from the Tokyo Medical Clinic. Orthodonture may be a different case.

There's a guy in Moto Azabu, near Tokyo Tower. Has a generic name... International Dental Clinic or something. The Dr. is Entatsu. He is good, but will run you about 18,000 yen for a cleaning. Too rich for my blood. Getting another one done when I go back to America (Fuck Yeah).

To clarify: the Tentacled One's intent is that searches for teeth whitening in Barnegat, NJ will for evermore lead to this auspiscious site with a strong affinity for dental improvements and general oral hygiene especially as they relate to Barnegat, New Jersey (wherever that may be; my personal mental association between dental work and the state of New Jersey comes from watching "The Sopranos", where in at least one episode Tony Soprano is responsible for creating a whole lot of work for a dental implant specialist, though come to think of it the victim may have been based in New York).

For what it's worth, I went back to Dr. Entatsu. He (or his assistant, actually) does probably a better job than I can remember in the states, so I'm quite happy. It runs about double what I'd pay for a cleaning in America, so yeah, I'm not too bothered. Not having to go 4 fucking times to get all teeth cleaned is worth the dough to me.

How so? I was paying $70~$100 for cleaning in LA. (Health insurance doesn't cover dental) with is on par with what they charge here, but then with insurance coverage we pay 2500~3500??

Only basic cleaning is covered under insurance, airflow cleaning, fluoride treatment etc are usually only private, but even so would be less than 10,000 full price.
Basic clean and polish on insurance could be as low as 1500.
But don't forget some Japan dentists try to scam you for separate visits for top and bottom cleaning, which doubles the price.
