In 2008 I furnished (no appliances) a 1K for less than 90,000 yen with stuff from Ikea (that is still around).

You can't just compare price. If you're paying for really high quality furniture it's going to cost more. However, the stuff I saw at Otsuka was way too expensive for what it was. Admittedly that was just the showroom stuff but 180,000 yen for one of these in pastel colors seemed a bit over the top.

Maybe it was a WWE combat chair ?

You can't compare prices, but honestly 90k for a chair is a fucking ripoff. Heck, my parents would have never bought shit for that much (they definitely have the money for it, but they consider buying a new car some sort of mortal sin). I know my parents have some cheapass sofas from 20 years ago still in the living room (actually I think one is 30 years old) that they have just continually had some sort of cover on (and they actually look pretty good now - but there's some terrible 90s color scheme under the cover). The dining room table is still the one we had from when I was a kid (and that cost like $300 IIRC).

We produce 90K chairs (we also produce ones that cost 22K). There's a market for every price level. If you want a designer chair that you can sit in for long periods of time, or are solid oak, or upholstered with genuine leather (and I mean real leather that has been vegetable tanned, not the ass of a cow that's been heavily chemically dyed and is full of scars and stretch marks), you're going to pay for it. It's the same with anything else. If you want a well cut designer suit that will last years and will look good on you, it'll cost you.

What IDC does though, is the bait and switch game. They use our handcrafted 2 million yen sofas made of the best leather and solid oak to draw someone in, then show them shit made in china with bad stitching and questionable leather and tell customers that there's no difference in anything other than the price. It's unfair to the consumer and is actually more of a ripoff than the 90K chairs, because in a few year's time, they'll end up having to chuck it out. So if they think they're getting a bargain by paying 50K instead of 90K, and have to buy a new one every few years, in 10 years they'll have spent 150K, whereas the 90K chair is still in good condition. You get what you pay for...

Yeah, it's weird to say X amount is too much for something without any qualification. I probably wouldn't spend $6000 on a mattress but having slept on a $6000 mattress at my friend's place, I can definitely say it's worth it if you can afford it.

But is it twice as good as a $3000 mattress?

For people with more than enough money, it might be worth it, but for even upper middle class people it's not. Furniture like that would make a great addition to The Millionaire Next Door.

The ironic thing about buying a chair that lasts 20 years is that the chair lasts 20 years, but styles can change a lot quicker. My grandparents bought furniture in the 70s and finally got rid of it 10 years ago - it fucking looks like furniture from the 70s.

Much as I disagreed with his politics I must admit Alan Clarke had a great line in put downs:

I don't have enough experience. Don't even know the maker of the ICU ones.

Meanwhile the "true sleeper" mattress memfoam topper over standard mattress are excellent. Tried at some spa/hotel.

Disclaimer, i can't stand spring or hard mattress and have a medium/soft non memory foam mattress from furniture dome. For me, the softer, the better.

I find those fancy foam type mattresses too soft and squishy; it's like being trapped in a cocoon. Too squishy for my tastes. And the bounceback on proper a proper spring mattress definitely gets a rhythym going. From what I remember of having sex with another person..........

Memory foam sex is like fucking in quicksand....but a thick memory foam mattress topper seems to be the best sleep for me.

Also...making your own furniture, especially beds frames that aren't even visible, is insanely cheap...

Yes to both. I have actually taken to topping it off with a Thermarest camping mat; one of the high rent self-inflating ones. Age, maybe?

Use theirs. Don't most home centres still offer a free Kei truck for an hour or 2?

Are mid 90's German sedans assembled in Germany less practical than those assembled in Tokyo?

A registered pervert wants to know: I can sleep in my perverted vehicle, and furthermore I can transport 1.9m items and three passengers at the same time (although not while asleep). And I get 20 Km per litre while doing it.

Ditto, though a little less than 1.9m, but OK for the usual 6 foot 2x4s or 4x6 plywood sheets. I contemplate to equip my k-spaceship with a roof rack in order to get 8 or 12 foot 2x4s home, which surely would be über-pervert
