My son and daughter also went at a younger age, and it learned them confidence. Even non-contact karate does that, and it keeps the bullies away, which was very helpful for my son.

When entering high-school my daughter switched to Shorinji Kempo, and she recently advanced to 1st dan. She looks quite fragile, and I am not sure she would be able to fight off a strong rapist, but better be able to do something than nothing at all. At the very least she gets taught some dirty tricks to defend herself, like striking sideways along the eyes, making painful kicks in the nuts, etc. Hopefully, she never needs to use them.
