Value Of The Eikaiwa Industry?

Postby tocamjapan » Fri Oct 15, 2004 10:40 pm

Hi, I've been searching the net, looking for information regarding the average amount of money spent on English education in Japan every year (particularly Eikaiwa schools). Can anyone help me out with a rough or relatively recent figure? Thanks.

I haven't got an answer...but can I clarify the question? Are you just looking at the private sector schools? You ask for an "average spend" so does that mean you don't want to include public expenditure on english language learning and instead want to look at what someone might spend each month themselves to learn English?
I guess an accurate estimate would have to include include eikawa school fees, textbook/CD/DVD sales, exam fees, homestay programmes etc

Smith's School of English's homepage asserts that:

"...the English conversation industry in Japan is worth more than USD$23,000,000,000."

8O

And, no, I didn't accidentally add 3 extra zeroes to that figure.

I don't believe their tongue is in their cheek...but they may have their fingers crossed.

Mulboyne, I suppose I am looking for a generalised figure on the overall esitmated amount that Japan spends a year on English, including expenditure on the eikaiwa, public and private school sector, and yes, I suppose all the incidental costs such as textbooks, exam fees, homestay programs etc.

Samurai wig, thanks for that figure. I appreciate it a lot.

Wow!! Smith's sounds like a great place to teach!

This school is underdeveloped and needs a teacher who wants to grow with the school. There is not much in the way of cash or teaching hours available at this time; however, we are prepared to offer very solid incentives for the teacher who is ready to take on this challenge.
