Bikes On Board The Bus

The Kanachu bus company has installed bicycle racks on the front of some of its vehicles. Each rack can take two bikes and you can use them for 100 yen a time no matter how long your journey. In Gunma and Hokkaido, it is reasonably common to find space available for bikes inside a bus or at the rear but the company claims this is the first time for bikes to be loaded on the front. During a trial which the company ran from March, around 76% of cyclists who tried the service indicated that they would use it again. Full details of the service in Japanese here (PDF)

It's somewhat surprising that something so practical yet pedestrian hasn't been implemented before.

Wait until the first pedestrian gets hit.
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

This has been standard in Connecticut (and many other places) for years.

Agreed...hence my surprise at the seemingly late implementation on the buses mentioned above.
