That's her Dad's fault imo, he should have conversed with her in English more when she grew up.

Maybe her dad was not able to speak to her due to distance issues.

She may not be fluent but she probably speaks more English than she lets on. It plays better on Japanese TV not to make a big thing of it. More on her in this thread.

Yes, I was also going to comment on this. She speaks just fine - I've heard her at least twice on TV (albeit short conversations). Also, in the last response from her on her fan mail page she says she speaks English with her father. I monitor this page closely since I write her letters all the time, but she hasn't published any of mine yet. Maybe if I use mosaics to blur the image...

The Japanese wikipedia article on her insinuates that she speaks English well enough to translate books (which she has apparently done) but doesn't do so for fear of being typecast as one of the NHK English monkeys.

I may have paraphrased that a bit :p
