james wrote:yeah, no worries, it's the survey i'm annoyed with. it occurred to me today though that the very fact people answered with shimane means it's not as irrelevant as claimed. see, we're number one at something now which leaves us with a bit of a paradox to resolve ]the[/I] foreigner living here.. (edit: in this town, not the whole prefecture)
if anyone would like to learn to speak like a hillbilly, i offer courses in izumo-ben.
on that note, any fgs that would like to visit the area (matsue castle, izumo-taisha, iroiro in addition to being about 2 1/2 hours from hiroshima city) is more than welcome to hit me up and i'll gladly put you up and show you around.
yeah, prolly cause there are no streets to viewthere's a nice manure pile not 10m from my driveway, however. all kidding aside though, it's a very scenic locale. i live in a valley surrounded by mountains, the water here is awesome and the air is very, very clean. the fall view is spectacular and if you're a skiier there is plenty of snow in winter and ski hills nearby.

Apologies to all Yokohamaites!

'Hama' rocked then!!
The place place started to go downhill when all those cvnts from Tokyo decided it was a cool place to visit on the weekend.
The place is turning into a fvkin' 'kankou machi' with elevated prices and no decent houses of ill repute left.![]()
Damn, I'm nostalgic for the 'Hama' of the seventies!!!!![]()

amdg wrote:James, actually your area doesn't look that bad. Nice scenery, fresh air, not too far to some nice beaches. There are plenty of worse places in Japan. For example, just even setting foot in the Yokohama suburbs makes me feel like I've been transported back into the 70's.
Apologies to all Yokohamaites!

dimwit wrote:An interesting note on this. I read a couple of year ago in survey of Japanese salaryman (sorry I can't find a reference) as to the locations they prefered to be tranfered to. As I recall, Kochi, Okinawa, Hokkaido, and Shiname came out as the least favorite places to be located. Saitama and Aichi were closer to the top of the list.

FG Lurker wrote:I would guess that a survey like that one would be heavily biased by how the transfer would affect one's career prospects. The further away from a company's HQ and the smaller the office the worse the transfer is. Those 4 are so remote and economically minor that they would be nearly suicidal for a career.

oyajikun wrote:I transferred from Tokyo to Okinawa some time ago, and while I totally agree that being so far away from 'Company HQ' can hinder ones climb up the golden career ladder (out of sight, out of mind), I couldn't be happier living here. Okinawa is a wonderful place to live, esp if you enjoy the outdoors/water sports,, and when it comes to quality of life and the amount of time spent with family, there is no comparison.
Then again, if I was single or more interested in propelling my career, I'd probably be happier elsewhere. Not a place for the overly ambitious. (Save the few extremely entrepreneurial folk I have met here)
