The worst prefecture? Tokyo by FAR! Too many fucking people, Ishihara runs the show, and it's the seat of the über-fucked national gov't. I can't think of a worse possible combination.

James, actually your area doesn't look that bad. Nice scenery, fresh air, not too far to some nice beaches. There are plenty of worse places in Japan. For example, just even setting foot in the Yokohama suburbs makes me feel like I've been transported back into the 70's.

Apologies to all Yokohamaites!
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Hey mhan, like what's wrong with the seventies, mhan the seventies like were groovy, mhan, like far~out, mhan.
'Hama' rocked then!!
The place place started to go downhill when all those cvnts from Tokyo decided it was a cool place to visit on the weekend.
The place is turning into a fvkin' 'kankou machi' with elevated prices and no decent houses of ill repute left.

Damn, I'm nostalgic for the 'Hama' of the seventies!!!!

Amen!!

Boy did you get that right! Yokohama is still nice in spots, but it really has lost its "old world charm" since they started turning it into a fucking circus. And right now, with the 150-year anniversary song-and-dance going on, it's just a cheap prefab mess.

Very sad, because it really was an incredibly cool place in the 70's.

i quite like it here, though it can be a tad inconvenient at times. i've gotten used to that but it was definitely an adjustment. it's unquestionably a small place and there is zero anonymity here for a fg. for the most part, and for me personally, thusfar the pros have outweighed the cons and i've stayed.

If you go in and ask for extra-small I'm sure they can order some in for you.

It's pretty hard for me to rank Japan by prefecture since every fucking place looks pretty much the same. The only differnce is population density so if you like the inaka, the cities are a cluster fuck and if you like urban life, rural Japan is going to be boring as shit.

I do like living in Tokyo because of the access to certain things that are harder to come by in other parts of Japan but that becomes less of an issue every year thanks to the ability to order or downloand pretty much anything you want on the Internet. If Japan weren't so damn centered around Tokyo when it comes to business, I might actually want to live somewhere else but that's probably not going to change in my lifetime.

dimwit wrote:An interesting note on this. I read a couple of year ago in survey of Japanese salaryman (sorry I can't find a reference) as to the locations they prefered to be tranfered to. As I recall, Kochi, Okinawa, Hokkaido, and Shiname came out as the least favorite places to be located. Saitama and Aichi were closer to the top of the list.

I would guess that a survey like that one would be heavily biased by how the transfer would affect one's career prospects. The further away from a company's HQ and the smaller the office the worse the transfer is. Those 4 are so remote and economically minor that they would be nearly suicidal for a career.

I transferred from Tokyo to Okinawa some time ago, and while I totally agree that being so far away from 'Company HQ' can hinder ones climb up the golden career ladder (out of sight, out of mind), I couldn't be happier living here. Okinawa is a wonderful place to live, esp if you enjoy the outdoors/water sports,, and when it comes to quality of life and the amount of time spent with family, there is no comparison.

Then again, if I was single or more interested in propelling my career, I'd probably be happier elsewhere. Not a place for the overly ambitious. (Save the few extremely entrepreneurial folk I have met here)

I have to speak up for my old hometown, Hamamatsu. There's a lot that's old and run down, but it's actually a got a lot of beautiful areas. The beaches especially are fantastic. Plus a lot of great Brazilian clubs and restaurants. The people were also really friendly.

On the downside, (a) ok, ACT City is pretty ridiculous looking, (b)in the pre-Amazon days, it was next to impossible to get anything from the US or Europe, and (c)if you're an FG, the only work opportunities are eikaiwa or getting married and opening a club/restaurant (which is the reason I left).

Still, if I had enough money to live comfortably on without a real full-time job, I wouldn't mind moving back there.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

That's not fair. If you're Nikkei, you can get a Nikkei visa and do a crappy 3K factory job. Or at least you could before the economy collapsed.
