I have been told several times that Japanese still had the very traditional obligation to send New Year's card to everybody in December.

Today a Japanese mother also confirmed to me that contrarily to other countries Japanese parents usually force their kids to work harder in subjects they are not good in order to be good at everything. She was proud to do differently and encouraging her offsprings to concentrate on what they like and are good at. I can't criticise that, but why does she believe that other Japanese parents are so unique ?

It is only human to fear the unknown. Stereotypes occur when people don't logically address this fear or worse still when they don't think for themselves about what is new to them.

A phobia is similar illogical fear.

To just accept that stereotypes are human is defeatist. Stereotypes are what stagnates a person, a company, a country, a society etc. They do not allow for things outside the usually accepted "wisdom" thus stiffling creativity and progress.

Well.... if it was a "traditional" Japanese restaurant in the States, let's say my home on the north side of Chicago, the waiter, cook, and owner most likely are Koreans or Taiwanese "passing" for Japanese.

Hell, the last Chinese restaurant I visited on Rush Street (Chicago's Roppongi) the Chinese waiter asked me if I wanted sugar for my oolong tea---even though I was speaking Chinese at the time, sheesh.

Actually....they do have fried chikin' wings in Japan: tebasaki (although it's more gristle than meat, I think).
