I don't get the point

I'm sure if I was negatively minded I could come up with equally stupid things said by Americans. Of course only an idiot would believe such comments were agreed to by every American

Have a good attitude and you will see another side of Japan. People with positive attitudes don't absorb negitive things, they absorb positive things. And vice-versus.

End your pity party and try to enjoy yourself, it really isn't that bad. It's all in the mental attitude. No doubt some things siad and done have hurt you, but now you're just hurting yourself.

Here's one I just heard recently: "The yakuza exist to protect Japanese from foreign mafia groups."

"The Japanese are obsessed with learning English and that has to be eliminated". ( Professor Yukio Tsuda. Nagoya University).

After police had been called to an apparant domestic disturbance, Consul General to Canada Shuuji Shimokuji explained that beating his wife was " a cultural thing and no big deal".

"We declared war on America and Britain.......it being far from Our thoughts either to infringe on the sovereignty of other nations or to embark on territorial aggrandisement."

"Despite the best that has been done by everyone, the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage."

"We have decided to effect a settlement of the present situation by resorting to an extraordinary measure." (ie surrender)

Showa Emporer Hirohito in his address to the Japanese people announcing Japan's surrender at the end of World War 2.
One is tempted to define man as a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason. - Oscar Wilde

I have been told several times that Japanese still had the very traditional obligation to send New Year's card to everybody in December.

Today a Japanese mother also confirmed to me that contrarily to other countries Japanese parents usually force their kids to work harder in subjects they are not good in order to be good at everything. She was proud to do differently and encouraging her offsprings to concentrate on what they like and are good at. I can't criticise that, but why does she believe that other Japanese parents are so unique ?

It is only human to fear the unknown. Stereotypes occur when people don't logically address this fear or worse still when they don't think for themselves about what is new to them.

A phobia is similar illogical fear.

To just accept that stereotypes are human is defeatist. Stereotypes are what stagnates a person, a company, a country, a society etc. They do not allow for things outside the usually accepted "wisdom" thus stiffling creativity and progress.

Just my two cents.

Damn, you the nail on the head...to 'not allow for things outside the usually accepted "wisdom" thus stiffling creativity and progress' sounds like the perfect description of Japan enjoying the 12th year of its "Lost Decade."

Getting back to the topic of "classic japanese comments... quotes from masters" my favorite Japanese justification comment is "to prevent confusion in the marketplace/public/system"...
"Cheap imported [air] tickets may cause confusion in the market, so we can't recognize them."

Well, since every topic I post on (other than that one about Steven Segal) is about which coutry is stupider... then turning into which person posting is stupider....then just boring me to death, I'll take Japan's side and add one from the states.

Said in a traditional Japanese restaurant to the waiter-
"You ain't got no egg-roll?....Whad'bout some fried chikin' wings?... "

My dear, patient, and kind friend who was the waiter didn't have the heart to break it to the customer about the geographical and cultural misconception she was suffering from.
Personally, I would have pulled out the nun-chucks that sushi chef's always have behind the counter and.... oh... wait, no that's right..... :hehe:
"I'm sure this would be really interesting if I had any idea what was going on..."

Well.... if it was a "traditional" Japanese restaurant in the States, let's say my home on the north side of Chicago, the waiter, cook, and owner most likely are Koreans or Taiwanese "passing" for Japanese.

Hell, the last Chinese restaurant I visited on Rush Street (Chicago's Roppongi) the Chinese waiter asked me if I wanted sugar for my oolong tea---even though I was speaking Chinese at the time, sheesh.

Hey Ameji,

Looking at your bald head has undoubtedly reminded GomiGirl that she needs to clear her vibrator.

So there. You do have some utility in this world outside of protecting democracy and crashing snacks run by old ladies.

Cheers!

Actually....they do have fried chikin' wings in Japan: tebasaki (although it's more gristle than meat, I think).
