Working In Japan (Oh god... not another)

Postby aquamarine » Fri Jun 06, 2008 5:31 am

Don't worry folks, this isn't one of those "Hey, I like anime and beat off to hentai anime... how do I live in Japan?!?!?!?!"

This is, instead one of those other threads that go like "Hey, many of you know me, and when I was 'removed' from Japan, I took university classes to return. In one of my classes at present, I will be writing a 7-9 page paper on the political issues surrounding foreign immigration into Japan in hopes to work there."

Now I have already done my time in the concrete jungle, however I'm looking for links that some of you may have squirreled away with regards to why one person might need a degree to live in Japan, what the governer of Tokyo has to say about foreigners as a whole (hole? heh) and why it is simply difficult for us to get a work visa.

Any help would be appreciated as I have a week to write this paper. For what it's worth, this is going to be for an Intro To Political Studies class that I'm taking over the summer course load merely as an elective. Three cheers for six summer classes, three hours per day each. Pff, if I didn't burn out in Yokohama from working 42 days in a row, I won't burn out from taking six summer classes.

Aqua-san - are you looking for detailed information on what the requirements are? Or are you trying to understand the *rationale* behind these rules?

Heya Omae, I'm looking for detailed stuff, so I'll peek at what Taro has posted.

There is a whole new section of this forum devoted to visas, degrees etc etc. Loads of links etc. Please read these before asking the same questions over and over again. Just because you don't get the answer you want to hear the first time, doesn't mean you are going to get a different answer if you ask again. Not directed really at you Aqua but you have been around long enough to know this. Don't get shitty as FG's don't make the rules.

Got it. I thought perhaps you were trying to peer into the minds of the Japanese lawmakers and bureaucrats and understand why they established these rules. But if you're just trying to get the list of rules, I think the links above from Taro & GomiGirl are good as gold.

If you're me you do. What you are saying is like saying "You don't need to have finished grade 12 to go to Harvard. Well yes, you do, unless you are an incredible scholar or have some other incredible reason that they would WANT you to come to their school.

Now quit trolling and go die in a ditch.

Well I would LOVE to get into the minds of those individuals, but unless you are one of the law-makers, I wouldn't be able to use your information (most likely) as I would need to be citing it in my paper.

I don't think he was trolling, just pointing out that you don't need a degree to get several types of visas here.

If not trolling, then I take it back, but I don't think there's a snowballs chance in hell of me getting an 'Entertainer' visa, nor would I want one. Great, suddenly stuck in the same level of people as the hookers that come up from the Philippines and Brazil. RIGHT ON.

When I'm finished my degree, I'll be getting a REAL work visa. None of these specialty-cant-get-a-visa-any-other-way kind.

Excuse me, but we prefer to be called "Health Specialists", and we worked damn hard to get where we are.

Putting on my linguist cap for a moment, you seem to have a subject/object disagreement here. You work, the customers get damn hard.

You should take a look at the immigration website. It's not only the sketchy visas that don't require a 4 year degree. In fact the only one I can think of off the top of my head (this is obviously only as reliable as my memory, so look it up yourself) that ABSOLUTELY requires a 4 year degree is the teacher visa. The others have other alternatives such as comparable work experience, or no such requirement at all. The whole "must have degree for visa" thing is just something that everyone accepts as fact, but if you read the requirements it's only stated for some of the visa types.
